Bom and raised in Clinton, Johnston still lives on what remains of his family's farm. lie and his wife, Cleone, have been married for SI years and are the parents of five children, Brent, Stephen, Sharon, Kathy, and Teresa. There are also eight grandchildren, two of whom are serving LDS Church missions in England and New Zealand. He was always busy doing things. But, he always took time to counsel with his children when they needed him, said Cleone Johnston. After 35 years of working on the state road commission, Johnston has retired, but not settled down. He continues to help out in his community. On June 20, lohnston will be honored as a communi-;- y hero during the Miss Utah Pageant in Orem. He will represent the six lakeside communities of Clearfield, Clinton, South Weber, Sunset, Syracuse, and West Point, as he escorts Miss Lakeside, Elizabeth Sanders, during the evening gown competition. All contestants were required to present a community hero. His baritone voice is often called upon by those who know him to sing at funerals, religious meetings and civic clubs. He used to perform in musical productions also. Johnston's love of music has continued to flourish in his children, especially his oldest son Brent, who is a professional pianist. He worked hard as a farmer. He was also a vocalist. In fact he died after per- forming at a wedding. He was community minded. He wanted everything to get improved and stressed the importance of education. With a legacy of serving on the Clinton City Council and a term as mayor, it's clear that Johnston has revisited his father's footsteps. Im back doing what I did when I was young and on the same piece of ground. I still dig in the dirt here, said Johnston of his joy in gardening. "He's always been really good to people. Hes been a good counselor to his kids. And he's a good listener, said his wife. Johnston is proud of the strong ties his family has. Unity - they would all do anything for each other. We are where we can all reach each other and distance is no obstacle. Cleone agreed, adding, They all want to come see us. We have our familys complete support. To prospective fathers and to fathers of all ages Johnston offered this advice, Communication - if you dont have that you dont have anything. He also advised dads not to remove themselves y from the rearing of children. Be an example to your children. If youre a good example they'll like you and want to be like you. Johnston has relied heavily on his religious upbringing and his fathers example of how to be a good father. Its important for a man to recognize that he stands at the head of his family. If he fails there the ultimate fullness in his family isnt there.
