By JANIS CARTER $( imurg summer cenospangn rt CLEARTILLD - Students at Hill I icIJ Llemcntary are learning there's more to poetry than juM rhyming. "Poems are meant to be heard because ofien the poem and its meaning is linked to how it sounds," sas artist in residence BJ Buckley. its not important that poets don't make lots of money, said Buckley, who has been working with the students for the past few weeks. Living in Montana in a home smaller than their classroom with her husband and two dogs, Buckley's house doesn't have electricity or running water and she's never had a brand new car. But she chooses to live that way and finds other ways to make money so she can do what she loves. She also said that poets are treated with much more respect in other countries. Buckley has published one book of poetry called "Artifacts and has had poetry published in magazines and other publications. The artist program, sponsored by the Utah Arts Council, gives Buckley the chance to go into schools and teach children many dimensions of poetry. For 22 years she has been with the program, working all over the Rocky Mountain West teaching Beginning with an introduction to poetry. Buckley reads by great poets and then talks about the poets. "I didn't know that I could be so emotional." Bill Bailey, a student. said. It wasn't as hard for him to write poetry as he thought it might be. lie said that he just makes up poems and sometimes he writes when he gets bored, but he always throws it away. Stefanic Logan, a said that she loves poetry and has entered some contests, but now she knows what kind of words to use when she writes, and she will have a better thought process. Poetry can be used in all grade levels, because all children can write good poetry, Buckley said. Brainstorming is done when a group poem is being written as a model for individual writing, stimulating thoughts and crcativi-ty. After the kids write poems or they read their own. Though some they are read by Buckley children are intimidated by reading in front of an audience. Buck-le- y tells them to picture their audience as sheep and to read very slowly to them. Then she tells them theyre old sheep and have a hard time hearing, so speak rue Wl - Hours II am 6 pm Monday through hulay liu (BOYDS COLLECTION) I , , t e students Tfaere express themselves Buckley has such a keen sense de- scribe a pine tree better than a botanist, making you feel like you were in a forest, Zizumbo said. 1 992 W.
