Show LAKESIDE Lakeside Review Tuesday, April 16. 1 996 3 Development of county traced back 1 50 years By RUTH MALAN ' Standard-Examin- correspondent SALT LAKE CITY - Although parts of Davis County came under the plow in about 1847, the first census wasnt taken until 1851, when Samuel McBride left his house in Farmington to count the residents of each home in the area. We get around to things in Davis County when they are important, joked Dr. Glen Leonard, who shared that and other historical anecdotes at a centennial brown bag ' Dr. Farmers needed water, it was a dry area, so they picked sites along streams and at the mouth of canyons, said Leonard. Most of the people settling in the area were friends in England and later friends in Nauvoo, 111. The. 1851 census shows that 94 percent of the 287 people living in Farmington were bom in the United States, while 4 percent were bom in the United Kingdom and 2 percent came from other places. Farmington had the highest percentage of people bom in the U.S. while Kaysville had the lowest. There were 171 residents in Kaysville with 67 percent born in this country and 32 percent in the United Kingdom. Bountiful had 85 percent of its 444 residents bom in the U.S. and 10 percent were from the U.K. Of the 217 Centerville residents 89 percent were U.S. born and 2 percent were from the U.K. Centerville had the highest percentage of those bom in other places. According to Leonard most of those born in other places came from Canada. Half of the adults (in Farming-ton- ) were bom in New York, said Leonard, the area was heavily populated by those bom in upstate New York so they had a common heritage. . Kaysville was different. Most of its population came from the United Kingdom while only 16 percent of Bountiful was British. The British had the strength of leadership, he said. The people got to know each other as they crossed the plains so they settled as neighbors when they got here. Some of the early Davis County residents didnt stay long and were difficult to track. I cant find anything about the ones that left. The ones I did find moved into the Weber County area, Leonard said. In the 1870s the area opened up and people moved to Layton, Clearfield, Sunset and West Point. The early settlers put saw and grist mills on major streams. The Stansbury Survey of 1850 has maps showing the streams and mills. I found evidence that a survey took place in 1849, Leonard said. County was settled. The program was fourth in the 1996 Centennial Brown Bag Series which is free and open to the public. It is held the second Thursday each month in the historic depot lecture room at noon. Leonard, a Farmington resident, is writing a history on Davis County which will be published later in the year. McBride visited Hector Haight in Blooming Grove, then went on to see Samuel Holmes who lived next to Sandy Creek, now known as Holmes Creek. After following the lower part of northern Davis County, McBrides trail can be traced up the old Mountain Road where he logged in the homes in what is now Fruit Heights. All of the creeks were named for people, said Leonard. People set up their homes along the creeks for a convenient supply of water. Davis County wasnt a directed settlement like most of the Mormon communities. LDS Church leader Brigham Young sent families to settle different areas, but he didnt do that with Davis County. The settling here' was more informal, Leonard said. In the fall of 1847, some of the Salt Lake church leaders were asked to take the large number of cattle outside of the center of the valley. This was when Young organized the first government. Five high councilmen were sent to find places for the cattle to range. These men picked friends and relatives' to go with them. up 50 nt r$. jer ice IlS- - '.'One herdsman, Peregrine Sessions, camped in the Bountiful area.
