Like all other instructors, she volunteers her time and talents to teach, so that the PTRUSWAT team can have the equipment it needs. The team is an operational unit of the sheriffs department, Campbell says, but it doesnt have the department budget, and any equipment that PTRUSWAT team members need must be bought themselves. Those two teams work in tandem," Campbell says. PTRU has the same training as a SWAT officer and theyre trained in doing medical emergencies in a very volatile situation. PTRUSWAT teams are used in situations with hostages or where an officer is down, to render care to the injured in the midst of an unpredictable situation. We started the only agency trained specifically for combat medicine, says. The Campbell PTRUSWAT teams supports four other SWAT teams in the Salt Lake area. They will go anywhere in the state to assist if needed, says Campbell. its Shes done an excellent job and really got to be, I guess, a labor of love, Sparks says about Camp- bell. The cost for the EMT course is $440, which includes books, workbooks, state testing fees, state background check, lab fees, tuition, and protocols and bandage packs for training. Of the $440 course fee, $140 goes to student supplies, and the back rest into the goes PTRUSWAT team, according to Campbell. The reason the money goes back into the team is that the instructors all donate their time, and it's their would-b- e salaries that are the funds that keep their equipment working, says Sparks. I think an important aspect is that all the instructors volunteer their time. They are not paid, many are not on the SWAT team, says Campbell. There are some areas of course work where an outside instructor is needed to teach, such as hazardous materials, where a firefighter volunteers his time. The course covers basic anatomy physiology, medical terminology, patient assessment, taking vital signs, handling and treatment of come and family size. Appointments are necessary. Sparks came up with the idea of holding EMT courses as a fundraiser for equipment and training costs four years ago. The PTRUSWAT team had a number of people in the unit who had been involved in EMT classes within different agencies within the state. At the same time they were receiving requests from people to conduct training. Private and public agencies were charging for these courses, and the PTRUSWAT team needed equipment. We had the resources to conduct this type of training with the PTRUSWAT team, and the only agency within the state licensed to have such a team, Sparks says. There has always been a continuous need for equipment for PTRUSWAT team training, says Sparks, and there was a demanding need for EMT training. The members of the SWAT team volunteered their time and efforts, not charging to teach, and donated that money back into training and equipment, says Sparks. The first EMT course was held in 1992, with one or two classes a year being held since then. Thats what makes the EMT classes offered through the Davis County Sheriffs Office unique. SWAT team members and other specialists train those who go through the Emergency Medical Training course. And its a labor of love, for the most part. Other than the satisfaction of doing a job well done, there is no compensation for any of the instructors, says Chief Deputy Kelly Sparks.
