Show 8 LakesideCommunity Tuesday. March 5. 1 996 Lakeside Review lu.S. SAVINGS BONDS Diabetics need team approach Diabetes is a chronic disease the body from the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. It affects the ability to convert the food you eat into the energy you need. Sugar is the bodys most efficient fuel and the body can make sugar out of many kinds of foods, such as starches, complex carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Everything you eat has the potential to convert into sugar. Without sugar, your body is like a car without fuel: You don't have the energy to move, think or even rest.' When food is digested, the sugar in the food enters the body's muscle and tissue cells where it can be used for energy. If you dont have diabetes, the pancreas makes insulin based on the amount of sugar in the blood. If you do have diabetes, your pancreas may not be able to make any insulin or enough insulin for the sugar to enter the cells. Insulin is hke a key that allows the sugar to enter the cells for energy and therefore the level of sugar in the blood drops. Types of diabetes. There are two mam types of diabetes. Type I is absolute insulin deficiency. The bodys pancreas makes very little or no insulin. Factors associated with this type of diabetes is in the immune system. Usually a virus causes the bodys defense system to destroy the insulin-makin- g cells in the pancreas. Type II diabetes is a relative in- sulin deficiency. The body may make insulin but cannot use it correctly due to receptors on cell surfaces being unable to accept insulin. No one knows the exact cause of ty pe II diabetes, but its more likely to occur in people who are over 40 years of age, overweight, have a family history of diabetes, are members of a minority group, have had diabetes during a pregnancy, have given birth to a baby weighing over 9 pounds, and have the stress of an illness or injury. In the U.S. about 13 million people, or 6 percent of the population, have diabetes. Half dont know they have it. In other words, in 30 people, about 2 would have diabetes, and one of them wouldn't know it. Of the diabetic population. Type I diabetes makes up around 10 percent and Type II about 90 percent. Its estimated that the majority of the Type II population has had the disease for up to three to five years before diagnosis. Some people with Type II diabetes dont experience any symptoms; this is one of the reasons it may go undiagnosed. Others will experience auditions slated Auditions for the 1996 summer season of Weber State University's Utah Musical Theater are planned 3 in the Val A. for March 12-1- Browning Center. r actors, ages are needed for the upcoming productions of "The Will Rogers Fol13; The Sound lies, June 3; Damn of Music, July and Forever Yankees," Aug. The new approach places the individual in charge of the disease using a team approach: To place you in the drivers seat, an active participants in the process; to inform and allow you to make and carry out choices regarding management through education, counseling and negotiation of therapy. Meal planning. People with diabetes should eat the same diet recommended for all Americans. The Food Guide Pyramid is a good tool for helping choose healthy meals. Its based on the following dietary guidelines developed by the Department of Agriculture: Eat a variety of foods; maintain a healthy weight; choose a diet low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol; choose a diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, and grain products. Use salt and sodium in moderation. The amount you eat and the times you eat may be important if you use diabetes medicines. Through medication management, you are trying to achieve the goals described in the 1994 ADA nutrition recommendations. These goals include: blood sugar in goal range; blood fats in goal range, adequate nutrition for health at all life stages; prevention and treatment of acute and long-tercomplication; personalized nutrition ' plan to support quality of life.
