When Campbell was given the award initially he received a $1,000 personal award and his school received $1,000 for him to use to facilitate his teaching. He then heard about the matching grant that was offered and applied for it. He received another $1,000 in matching funds, for the school. I had to give a proposal stating specific ways I would use it, he said,' r,VT' He wanted video equipment to help with his teaching. I have part of the equipment and am using it, he said. I wanted a video camera with a small screen on it so I could turn it around and let the kid look at it immediately. Now they can observe things as they do them. It really has been fascinating to1 me to see how much they have learned. What I hoped would happen is .happening. I wanted recording equipment to facilitate that process. Not all band teachers have the opportunity to use the type of video and sound equipment that Campbell uses in his classroom. He was able to buy it because of a recent award he received through the Davis School District Foundation. The music teacher had been awarded the school districts Horizon Award as Teacher of the Year for 1995, and received matching funds through the foundation. He was able to get his school $2,000 to use in his department through the two awards, said Sheryl Allen, foundation director. Each building in the district selects a teacher as; a nominee for the Horizon Teacher of the Year.- The nominations come from the faculty.
