In my experience, after completing six or seven applications you low commitment and do less than your best. Additionally, since application fees range at high as S50, the cost of multiple applications can quickly become overwhelming. Dont worry if you haven't Val Criddle Layton re- duced your choices to just one kind of institution. At this stage, it's normal and perfectly fine still to be considering large state universities as well as small liberal arts colleges. Occasionally, panic sets in as and "Wc usually have a family have dinner. Wc may drag out old home movies and show ihcm. Your parents may freak out and decides you haven't included enough schools, pushing you to add on a Harvard or a Stanford. In general, applications look like afterthoughts. Resist the temptation to submit a slipshod application "just to see what hapsupcr-sciceti- last-minu- te pens." It rarely accomplishes anything. When you approach teachers and counselors for letters of recommendation. ask first if theyre witling to write on your behalf. No law requires them to put their reputations on the line for you. Tell them your goals, give plenty of advance notice Larry Pulsipher Fruit Heights Normally we arc home, but the last two or three years wc have chosen to go elsewhere. This year wc are going down to Pine Valley, which is by St. George. There is a lodge there and cabins. We just go down for two or three days and let them cook dinner. There will be six of us. Wc can ride horses or snowmobile or whatevcr.Jfs kind of a nice break. We do that because wc had a son killed about four years ago at this time of year. So its become kind of an unfun thing for us to hang around so wc just go and its turned out good. Ive never thought of (the holiday) as being lost because in our family its been one of our big times even though its been a struggle for us in recent years. Weve always had good times on Thanksgiving. Through the years we have gotten together with my family, brothers and sisters and they bring their group. Weve done a lot of ' different things. Its certainly not lost for us. Its basically a family thing. Its about as valuable as Christmas, maybe even more so because you get together for the simple reason youre getting togcthcr..to talk and enjoy one another. We certainly havent ignored Thanksgiving. Its a highlight for us. and provide stamped, addressed envelopes along with the recom- mendations forms. Almost all selective institutions require an essay in your applica- tion. Instead of dreading this requirement, wise students welcome the opportunity to speak directly to the college about their thoughts and values. Share something about you that is not going to come through elsewhere in the application pro- cess. In writing essays, the most frequent mistake is trying too hard to impress. Of course, spelling and grammar must be perfect. And neatness counts. But above all, you want your voice to come through. The essay should reflect the concerns of a young person. Whats unique about you and your background? What do you love and love to do? What do you want the college to know about you? Consider also what might make you attractive to a college, then spotlight those qualities. For schools in the East, for example, Utah represents geographic ty and you might emphasize an aspect of Western life in your essay. If herding cattle on horseback has taught you something about self, use that experience to guish yourself from all the college applicants who only know suburban New York malls. If you suffer writers block, you might start by pretending youre writing a journal entry or letter to an old friend. Go heavy on the anecdotes and light on quotations from literature. Dont be too Refrain from whining off-the-w- about your teachers and school. You dont have to be a Pollyana, however; you might write an excellent essay about how you made the best of a bad experience. If theres something you feel the admissions office needs to know to understand your record, it may be best to write a separate letter to ac- company your application rather than using your essay to explain. For example, if your sophomore grades were horrible because your brother was extremely ill and your parents divorced that year, explain in a letter that deviation from your otherwise superb academic record. Parents: Colleges are aware that students usually have someone read their essays. Its fine to help your student focus his or her thoughts, but remember to model the ethics you want your student to practice. Rewriting your student's essay is fraud. No! to a new recreation complex that would have been very valuable, and had a positive impact on our community, not only for the youth of our community, but for the whole family. I suppose congratulations are in order for Mr. Oda and his committee against a progressive city." They mobilized and misinformed the public very well. For example, your taxes. would not have gone up on the repayment of the bond just because the county reassessed your property. The amount of the bond would stay the same and everyones property would be reassessed. Mr. Oda also claims other cities should have chipped in because they would use the complex. I suppose he has never played on an Ogden City course or picnicked at the Layton City Park. Mr. Oda and his band of Merry Men should also oppose the proposed viaduct at 200 South because someone from another city might drive over it. It is now time for the Pod People of Fearfield to crawl back into their holes, so they can't see the surrounding cities get what could be ours-. L. Main, Layton, UT, 84041 have Thanksgiving decorations that I have ' Ive got my homemade noodles ready to cook; that adds to the kids looking forward to their traditional Thanksgiving; Im from Southern Utah and we had a tradition down there that the fruit salad is called a Dixie ' salad and we put pomegranates in it with apples and pineapples and maybe it doesnt sound so good, but its very good. 'Then I always make homemade white bread that I make stuffing out of and Ive already got that made. As a tradition when I was our forefathers are from growing up in Southern Utah we always had a turkey noodle soup. Mother used Switzerland the giblets to make the soup with and we neverhad gravy over the potatoes; we ate the noodle soup over the mashed potatoes. My husband likes gravy better on the potatoes so we have gravy and we have the soup as an appetizer before dinner. What makes it is all the family gets together and all of the guys go downstairs and watch football and the girls do the dishes...then later in the evening they come up and have the pic and start making turkey sandwiches out of the leftover rolls. There isnt as much commercial to do with Thanksgiving; it isnt the typical gill giving and the excitement with Santa Claus, but thanksgiving in our family has always been one of the favorite holidays of the kids just because of the traditional food that they dont get any other time of the year. They like it and look forward to the and the food. I think we should preserve it because that is the time of giving our thanks for all that we have, for the founders of this nation. That is the main reason of Thanksgiving. I out in my home now. er Dennis Smith Layton We have someone not from this country come to have dinner with us. This year wc are having someone from Poland come and have dinner with us. We started this tradition because wc thought it was a good idea. Weve had foreign' students come and live with us and in explaining to them the different holidays, wc realized how really unique Thanksgiving really is. Not many places in the world have a holiday like Thanksgiving. Canada has their version of Thanksgiving, but not ; very many other places in the world do. What wc get back from it is just having them in and explaining whal our country is all about and about the early part of our country, which is so different from the European community. Our history is so different from what theirs is and they sometimes have a hard lime understanding what our country is really about. In teaching. I have a son and this year we have a foreign student living with us. Its another way of reinforcing what we know about our country. Another way of learning more about us. We love it. . ' 3 |
