Besides emphasis on artistic skills like shading, graphic design, and color schemes, Sheila Maxen will help art teachers develop more thorough instruction in subjects like aesthetics, art history and artistic civilizations. Mavcn said she will encourage art teachers to emphasize what she calls the four Cs: Community, civilization, creativity, and choice. The Davis course of study includes all of these areas, Maven said. But a lot of teachers only have background in art production. Maven said her prime goal in her new Community Briefs , 1 Fibromyalgia group f to hear psychologist CLEARFIELD Learning how to relax is one of the most impor- tant ways to cope with stress. Maven was most recently the director of the art department at South Davis Junior High, where she taught for 10 years. She also has a masters degree from Brigham Young University in discipline-base- d art education, a field she says breaks art down into serious branches of knowledge. Maven said teaching these same branches of knowledge are part of national Education America Goals 2000. The new curriculum coordinator says schools and districts arc left to voluntarily follow these national goals. However, she said those that do are eligible to receive grant moneys to aid their programs. Maven plans a number of activities and resources to help teachers learn and adapt to broader art education. She has scheduled inscrvice training sessions for art teachers and sharing sessions where teachers can discuss their challenges and successes. Maven also plans an art newsletter and other communication tools for teachers. She said an art curriculum resource center soon will be opened at the district office. DAVIS HEALTH TODAY There are several types of chemi- depending on the strength and type of chemical used. In general, the deeper and stronger the chemical peel, the better the results are. However, the risk of complications are greater with the strong peels. Phenol peels are the oldest and strongest chemical peels. When properly applied they can produce remarkable results safely. However, often this chemical peel will produce some lightening of the skin. In addition to this, the period of healing after phenol peels can be prolonged up to three or four weeks. TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peels are a more intermediate-strengt- h peel. TCA peels can produce good results with a shorter period of healing (one or two weeks), and less risk of complications. The results of these peels are good, but not as ally not used on Oriental or patients. They cannot remove deep wrinkles such as those in the jowls or deep neck wrinkles. A face lift, or similar procedure, would be better for these problems. With most chemical peels, a mild acid is applied to the face in such a manner as to produce what could be thought of as a controlled burn (much like a strong sunburn). The outer layers of the skin are burned away and a new layer of skin grows in its place. In addition to this, the deeper structures of the skin (collagen and elastin) also realign them- selves to an orientation more similar to that of a young person. , 0 5t TRAMPOLINE RE-SE- ('HI I any fra I fanr-- (MTOEfl? Maven believes emphasis on more areas of study in art programs will give the subject more credibility and establish art as an important area of learning. Students need an overlapping of knowledge, she said. She quoted national educators who say that in a complex society like ours, art must take on social responsibility.
