Corporate America and it wealthy invev ter did OK but the working people and our country paid a tremendou price. Look at our national debt and the condition of our country. Goes what. NAITA it one of the tame good deal that wc common folk Americans cant refute. Then in 10 to 20 year horn now we will be told that NAFTA wasnt uch a good deal and corporate America and our government will be trying to kII u another deal that wilt be too good to refuse. NAFTA wa crcateJ by corporate America for corporate America. All of the guarantees were written in the agreement for them. The only thing in the agreement for the working-cit- s people were a few side agreement of which arc not enforceable or legally binding in anyway. Therefore. I believe they were eye wash to help sell corporate Americas agreement to the American people. It almost appeared as if a corporate America Mafia had a gun pointed at our presidents head. He did all kinds of insane wheeling and dealing at the taxpayers expense with Congress to gel this monster of an agreement passed. Guess who gels to pay the bill for NAFTA? Guess who is going to profit? Im not so sure I know, so i'll let you figure it out. Our president and vice president with their slick talk told us that they have faith in us. that wc can compete with the world markets. I agree, but I saw this only as sweet talk to help sell their agreement. Why hasnt corporate America kept companies at home so our people would have already proven that they could compete with the world market? For example, people of the Appalachian region would love to have had some of the companies that went abroad. They are a proud people and would work hard, all they wanted and needed was a chance. But they were denied this opportunity because of corporate Americas greed for profits and lack of patriotism, as I see it. Dennis McClune Layton Teachers can give greatest gift of all I have a special wish for all teachers. I wish for each of you a warm and loving Christmas season. May the chill of the season warm your heart for those who have less. While you are teaching during December, may the warmth of the season flow from you to your students. May the hopes and dreams you have become yours as you help students to achieve their fondest wishes. During this time of may you give the greatest gift knowledge. As the students come to your rooms, may they be filled with the joy of learning. Teachers give the greatest gift of all. Students look to us for the key to their future. They want to be able to learn all we can teach, and then be able to learn all there is to know after they leave our classrooms. Each of you are instilling in them the desire to further their education after their years with us. This is the greatest gift of all. With all of the ornate wrapping and fancy gifts that will be given during the next few days, you as a teacher possess the potential of changing the future of everyone you meet. This simple, unadorned gift is one you give everyday. I am thankful for all of the caring, dedicated teachers in our state. We have such diverse and talented faculties in our schools, I am constantly amazed by the talent and g, Jesus is the real reason we celebrate Christmas Every year at this time someone says or writes what they think Christmas means, and it turns out that their meaning of Christmas is about the same as everyone elses. Im sure that is because Christmas really is for children and Christmas trees, for lights and tinsel, for giving and receiving presents and good wishes, and for families getting together GUEST COLUMNIST Pastor M. Lacy and reflecting upon simpler times when life seemed to be shared more with those you loved.. .yes, and for remembering that that little babe in Marys lap that first Christmas morning really was Gods wonderful gift. Thats the good news of the gospel. But to understand what makes it good news and to make Christmas more meaningful, ones thoughts must go beyond just the giving and receiving of gifts and a babe in a manger. No other event has had the impact upon this world as the birth of Mountain View Baptist Church in Layton Christ as a little baby in a manger. He is the reason we celebrate. But what if Jesus had not come? I cant think of anything that would cast a darker spell over humanity than if He had never come. But thank God, He did come. Angels, exalted beings from Heaven, came on that first Christmas Day and Sang to men out on a hillabout this top outside of Bethlehem miraculous birth. What is it about this time of year that seems to make even the meanest of us a little more mellow? Why do some people who arent usually so thoughtful rack their brains to come up with a way they can help the needy? This is the season of the year when we put aside our selfishness, and the giving of gifts becomes the order of the day. Why is that? Its all because of what the angels sang about almost 2,000 years ago. But, what if Jesus hadnt come: What then? If Jesus hadnt come, the Old Testament promises of a redeemer would have been broken and all the hopes of the people of ages gone by would have been shattered. Disappointment and despair would be the feeling of all of us today, and there would never be any hope for any of us becoming any thing more than we could become in our own strength. There would be no forgiveness of sin, no release from the- - guilt of those sins. There would be no remedy for a wasted life. How sad it would be today if Jesus had not come. If Jesus hadnt come, you and I would have never known that our God is a great and loving Father. Men have always wanted to know what God was like. In Jesus Christ we see the exact image of His person; Gods character, life and actions were those of Jesus. If Jesus had not come, we would not have known how to approach God, let alone to have right standing with Him. Men would have been lost from God forever, for Jesus himself said, No man comes to the Father except by me. If Jesus had not come, we would have never had the opportunity to have eternal life. But thank God, He did come! And I wonder how those angels felt when they learned that He who out of nothing made everything that was made; that He who threw the spinning worlds and planets and stars into space as though they were tiny balls of cotton; that He who had laid the foundation of this universe and filled it with all kinds of wonderful things; that He who is God was coming Himself to Earth as a human to become the servant and the very humanity that He had created and to pay the debt for sin. What must they have thought? Yes, He came with one supreme objective: To be the Saviour of all mankind, to as many as will believe upon Him. No wonder the angels sang with joy that night when' He was born, for this was the best of all possible good news for mankind. Understanding these things and receiving Gods gift of life is the way to make Christmas more meaningful this year.
