Despite these considerations, at least the workers are trying to do as little damage as possible and I for one would like to thank them. Dr. Rnmikl S. Rankin La 17 on just wanted to let you know don't ever start printing depressing negative articles. ..we have enough of those out there! I icki Staib Layton Lawsuit turns adoption into the Utah State Department of portation revealed that the added expense of providing buses, drivers, maintenance and fuel for ineligible students is very high. Considering the vital student education services which are underfunded, a decision was made to trim the expense and provide bus service only to those students who qualify for state funding. Of course, exceptions are made when walking routes or conditions are determined to be hazardous. A district committee, which includes parents and city officials familiar with safety issues, studies and determines the merit of each request from a neighborhood or parent. Concerns are particularly focused toward the elementary-ag- e level and the inexperience of younger children. Stricter eligibility compliance began last year in Bountiful and the Lynn Trenbeath Assistant Davis School District focus has shifted to schools in the northern part of the district this year. A notification letter was sent to families in their registration packets if there is a change in eligibility. All routes continue to be evaluated at both the elementary and secondary level. The transporting of 7,000 Davis students to and from 68 schools each day while traveling around 1 two million miles each year requires a large budget, around $3 million, and five of the past seven years the state has underfunded this program. The purchase cost of one bus alone is $70,000. The Davis transportation department has been named one of the most efficient systems in the state, with each driver and bus covering three to five schools each day. The intricate scheduling requires a computerized program to make sense of the routes for regular and special education students, field trips and the 3,500 activity trips scheduled last year. The district's 170 buses are serviced, painted, reupholstered and repaired by our own staff, and buses pass rigorous state safety inspections each year with high ratings. If parents have questions or suggestions regarding this program, they may be directed to Jack Gravid, who is director of LETTER POLICY The Lakeside Review encourages readers to submit letters to the editor. Ihe stales distance foimuia is not practical because in many n districts most sludenis loe within the I '.mile limit, yet iliet may have lo venture down mans hazardous roads lo gel to Ihnr school. There were hours of study and prioritizing before a decision was made to cut back on transportation for students who dont qualify for state transportation funding. For many years we have seen a continual increase in the number of students riding district buses to and from school every day, some new residents and some taking advantage of empty spaces. 1 Many of these students are not pligible to ride the buses because the distance from their homes to School is less than 2 miles. Nancy Safsten (who has a lawsuit against LDS Social Services. St. Benedict's Hospital and the doctor who delivered her son), who seems so in denial that she can't even own up to her own actions. Docs she think that she would look better in the community if she says that she was drugged and forced to give up her child? Nancy was 23 years old and a teacher at the time of her pregnancy 26 years ago. If she didn't like what she heard from LDS Social Services (that site would not be able to go to the Celestial Kingdom if she kept her child) then as an educated woman why didn't she seek other opinions0 She has met her son that she relinquished. What more does she want? Her parental rights restored? Where does that leave his adoptive familv? Let's all let Nancy know that we do nol agree with the radical ideas and ways that she is exhibiting them, u SI 10 million lawsuit against the people that made sure that her son that she placed with them had a good family and every opportunity for a great life. Why can't she just feel joy that he hail these chances and that she has a chance to be involved with him now? Instead she is turning the whole adoption process into a three-rin- g circus. C'mon. While I have the utmost respct lor "Americas Finest." they don't deserve lo he racked up against teachers, nor teachers against them. The author apparently tries to compare apples lo oranges, and I don't see any connection. While its true that teachers work ISO school days plus another l(J or so before the year starts and after it ends, those who work "five days a week all year" really work 210-22- 0 days per year after vacations and holidays are subtracted. He's correct in writing that teachers arent on call 24 hours per day. but many of them bring work home al night, and I can assure you that they receive telephone calls at home. Yes. Mr. McClune. teaching does require a college (leaching) degree. In addition, teachers must take college classes during the summer to remain certified and keep their job. You seem lo believe that I tali teachers have it made, so please let me point out a couple of facts concerning the leach iim profession in I tab. My wife recently returned from job with the Depart men t of a De- fense School System (DODDS) teaching in one of the American schools in Europe. DODDS pays its teachers the AVERAGE wage a teacher with the same qualifications makes in the ESA: not California wages nor Mississippi wages, but the AVERAGE I'SA teacher wage. With a master's degree in special education and IS years of special cel teaching experience, my wife took a SI 4.000 annual cut in pav when we came to L'tah. That's hove Ctali is number 47 out of 50 in teacher pay. To make matters worse, the ratios in l'tah classrooms are ridiculous, packed to the point that the students arc really the ones being hurt, and there's no rebel in sight. I almost forgot to thank you for the one-haof I percent raise the teachers will receive after waiting for empty promises that never matured, culminating in a threat to strike. While I don't condone a strike by anyone. I suspect that next year L'tah may be number 50 on the list. We want the best education for our future leadlf ers. right0 In summary. Mr. McClune. if you feel compelled to write again, please find a more constructive topic, and quit trying to compare Mormons lo Catholics. Rod I hompson Lar ton s |
