And like any new year we all make resolutions. To find what high school students are planning and hoping for the new year the Lakeside Review randomly asked what was each students resolution, class schedule and plans. They are Republican, Democrat and Libertarian; Andre Marrou, the presidential candidate of the Libertarian Party will be at the Clearfield (North Davis) library Aug. 26" at 7 p.m. The public is welcome. Larry Livingstdn Davis County Libertarian chair STREET TALK Kimberly : More hunting fees wont improve environment High, Ill try to get good grades sophomore so I can try out for the schools drill team, make a lot of new friends and have a lot of fun. Im taking dance and theater and geometry and all that fun stuff. Darin Yeager, Clearfield High, junior My plans for my junior year at Clearfield High would be to be a good officer. Im junior councilman for my class; to make the soccer team and do well; to do good in my classes and get a good education; to be especially nice to my teachers to get those good grades. Im also vice president over clubs in DECA and goalie on the soccer team. . Also, to have fun. Im in a productions class and were doing a play this year and I hope to do well with that. I just hope I have enough time to do everything with work and all. Im probably going to try to be a lot ; nicer. Your sophomore year is really hard on you at first because you dont know too many people. I had a brother there before me which made it easier but now that youre a ju- - . Darin Yeager Kimberly Long nior you know everything. They say your junior year is the funnest and I hope so. Ill go to a lot more dances probably, and ask a lot more girls out. Lisa Carver, Layton High, senior To work hard and try to be on the honor roll. I guess not to mess around as much, not as much as last year. Im taking AP English and AP American history, creative writing, and health occupations III, and housing and interior design. Im just trying to decide on a major for college so I just took different classes to help me decide. I just want to get the most out of them that I can. Im excited. This is about the first year Ive been excited so I can graduate and get it over with. Aaron Edwards, Davis High, junior : Upon receiving my big game procama-- 3 tion early this year I was angered to find that the Manti. deer hunt was reduced' .to six days due to low .deer population. To my family this is a. large blow;bccaus''iy-- l I can remember wg have air'a$- s, sembled (cousins, uncles, e,tc4 on the west side of Manti to hunt deer4f)'f(iis is the only chance for all the males, in our, family to get together during the year. Now,; the DWR tells us that we have only 6 days ; to hunt deer? Now the. family must find 4 new plate to hunt,, which will be hard for all, especially thp senior, Citizens that have hunted there for countless deer hunts.'', ; Now the DWR has gorie' td far. I Recently found that I must purchase an.Upland game stamp? What exactly Is so great about Utahs upland game hunt in the first place that I need to pay extra to partied pate? Will the extra money go to improving habitat, or even to stock birds? I for one know that this fee is just one of many ridiculous charges the hunter has paid to improve a situation heshe did not create. Utah needs to improve its outdoor situ: ation before it is too late, but why do we hurt the individual? Why not make the big ranchers pay for their damage to the environment which has destroyed Utah hunting for the future. The hunter shouldnt have to pay for something that was destroyed by private interests. Make those who have profited from the environment also pay to improve it. If I thought that this new fee or shortening a hunt would er since To have a lot of fun. To get good grades so my parents will let me go out on the weekends and stuff. Have more school spirit than I did last year, like attend more games and show more school spirit. (Im taking) history and English and a lot of economics and computer classes. Thats what Im interested in. Gina Smith, Clearfield High, junior At Clearfield, a lot of the kids are going to the new high school, which are a lot of the kids from my junior high. So, Im going to try to find a lot more new friends this year. I want to work really hard for scholarships and the ACT, thats coming up. Maybe not give up at the end of the year like I did last year. Just to work hard and have fun, I guess. Im taking health occupations to go into nursing, thats two periods a day. And choir, and for volleyball, conditioning. English, the basics. I hope that health occupations class will help me to decide if I want to go into nursing. I think I do and then I can figure out which career I want in the medical field. I know a lot of it is geared toward the ACT, like math and English. Heidi Lunt, Layton High, sophomore a lot differ(It will be) interesting ent from junior high and elementary. There will be a lot more people. Im taking ceramics, psychology, drama and a capella choir. Im going to try to get a 4.0 or at least a 3.9. Im going to spend a lot more time on my homework than I did last year. Ill just try to work harder so I can get a scholarship. , improve hunting I wouldnt question the idea, but the more they take from. the hunter for improvements, the more private interests profit. Return control for Utahs environment back to individuals and out of the hands of ranchers and other private interests. Nick Jorgensen Syracuse Senate candidate not all that new to Washington In Robert Bennetts advertisements he talks about sending new faces to Washington. Well, the facts reveal that Bob Bennett is an old Washington face, who was very active in all that is wrong with Washington. Bennett worked as a Senate staffer for years. He was hired by his father, nepotism at its worst, a practice so wrong that it is now against the law. Bennett left his fathers office for another federal govern- ment job in the Department lof Transportation (a federal regulatory agency). Bennett left the federal government to Think positive ; By BARBARA A. SMITH Immediate past Davis County PTA president We all want the best education possible for our children. Getting it is not as hard ; ' as you may think! The U.S. Department of Education says that parent involvement can lead to im- proved student achievement, increased school attendance, reduced drop-orate and decreased delinquency. What is even more exciting is that these improvements come about regardless of the familys economic, racial, or cultural background. How can parents get involved in a positive way that will influence their childs ut get involved in cash in on his government connections by purchasing the Mullen Co. The Mullen Co. was a public relations firm that lobbied congress for its clients. Bennetts past entails work in Congress, in the executive branch and as a Washington lobbyist. He only left Washington and his relationship with the federal government after his lobbying firm was forced to close because of revelations about his firm that were brought out during the Watergate investigations. Robert Bennett is the ultimate insider who was part of what is wrong with Washington. They are now finding out that individual help at home can have an even greater impact on student success than individual help at school. As parents, we have a responsibility to know whats going on in our childrens school. We can have a very positive impact on our childrens educational experience by becoming committed to the fact that it takes a partnership between the parents, the teachers, and the students to help our schools be the best they can be. Watergate was the most serious attack on the U.S. Constitution since the Civil War. Yet, in the Private Eye article. The Spooky Past of Bob Bennett, Bennett calls those interested in this attack on the LETTERS Bennett scandals too numerous to ignore Is Bob Bennett the Bill Clinton of the Utah senatorial race? I remember Bills early problems with draft dodging, infidelity, and favoritism articles in the press. It seemed like every couple of weeks another crisis would surface. Of course Bill always had good explanations of his innocence or else it was no one elses business. He claimed his oppo- nents were just being mean. Now Bob, like Bill, is laying the blame for articles about his haunting past in the press at the feet of his opponents. Bob knew nothing of Mullens CIA contract when he bought the company. He knew nothing about his employee E. Howard Hunt's involvement in planning the Waand buggings. He never tergate break-in- s knew the source of the milk scandal contributions to the committees he set up. In fact, you can say Bob Bennett knew nothing in the 1970s. Bob wants to remind us of famous people and he docs. Only instead of Jefferson and Franklin its Sgt. Schultz of the old TV show Hogan's Heroes. Schultz would walk into the POW barracks, see all kinds of illegal activities, roll his eyes, and walk out saying, "I see nothing. I know nothing. I also believe Bennett is wrong when he says 99 ,of the people dont care about what happened 2Q years ago. I care what happeneduring the Watergate era. I believe all people Concerned about the constitution should care; It is because of Bennett's deep involvement with E, Howard Hunt, G. The real question is, What scandal did you know nothing about next, Bob? Howard Hughes campaign contributions? Superfund problems with Bennett Paint? Bob Bennett Denies Scandal headlines are becoming more numerous than Elvis sightings. As the September primary nears remember what President Bush said, Who do you trust to make change work for you?" Hopefully it is not Slick Willie and Bob. Rod Stack Layton Cannon has record as responsible leader As the November elections draw near, the race for Senate has drawn a lot of attention. Without putting down any of the other candidates I would like to speak out in behalf of Joe Cannon. I worked at Geneva Steel for almost 20 years before it was closed by USX. I can remember how homes were hard to sell and work was hard to find in Utah Counable to turn to Geneva when it started back up. I can assure you that there has been more improvements made in the equipment for both the environment and the production in the last five years than there was in the ty. Thanks to Joe Cannon I was re- preceding years under USX. Joe has proven to be a responsible leader. We all know what he has done for the steel plant, Geneva School, and many other places throughout the state. He personally helped our family when we lost our oldest son. Thank you Joe! I know he has helped many others since returning to Utah. Let us allow him the chance to work for us in Washington. Charles Humble Pleasant Grove Utah needs Owens to preserve wilderness With so much attention" focused on the November elections Voters should not overlook the Sept. 8 primary when candidates for U.S. Senator will be determined. I encourage support for Wayne Owens, who has served the state well in the House of Representatives. It is with a deep understanding of the state and its people that Wayne Owens has proposed wilderness designation to protect and preserve some of Utahs wild lands for the enjoyment of people and the protection of the wildlife and fauna. Unfortunately, too many people exhibit a knee jerk reaction to the concept of wilderness. With our state and national population growing at a rapid pace it is vital that we enact protection for this small segment of our state so that our children will have the opportunity to enjoy it. While Owens may have built his reputation around the wilderness proposal he has been progressive in addressing other needs in Utah. I urge voters to gather information, go to the polls Sept. 8 and to vote for Wayne Owens to run for the Senate. Jean M. Lown Logan Graham smart candidate for attorney general This indeed may be the year of the woman in politics. But far more importantly, without doubt it is the year in search of leaders" by the voters of our state and nation. Jan Graham, candidate for Utah attorney general, is a proven and respected leader. During her term as solicitor general in the attorney generals office, her progressive management skills and style created the environment which has enhanced the performance and efficiency of the entire so-call- ed staff. Ms. Graham is acknowledged by her peers, as well as admired by the public, as a strong, ethical and successful attorney.
