LAYTON More than 300 people from the ages of 4 to 79 gathered in the parking lot at Layton Hills Mall Saturday to take part in the sixth annual Sneakers and Paws runwalk. But, they werent alone because about 180 of those people brought dogs of all colors, breeds, shapes and sizes. Sneakers and Paws is a major .fund-raissponsored by the Utah Guide Dog Association. More than $1,700 was raised as people, including entire families, and their dogs walked or ran on designated paths around the mall and into Layton. Participants paid a $10 registration fee per person. Winning ribbons .were given to the top three winners in 13 categories. The money raised is used to supit association and port the 'to pay for emergency veterinary expenses that arise while a family has a in their w, jg, - I, d, band Powder Ridge. It was a fun day because we were able to socialize with all the other people there and our dogs got to socialize, too, with lots of other dogs." This was her first time out for the event but she says she intends to do it again next year. Victoria Hill and her father, Roger, both won ribbons. I had fun walking my dog Bridette and I liked doing this walk because we could raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind so I was learning how to give to other people, she said. Amy Crosland and her brother Ben also won ribbons and said they liked being out in a race with their dogs Buck and Wags. Proceeds from the race benefit after seeing some of the guide dogs, our family is talking about raising one in our home, but we have to wait awhile because right now we have a lot of animals." Marilyn Koroulis of Kaysville, who serves on the board for the Utah Guide Dog Association, says the program started in Utah in 1980 and has steadily grown since then. We had 10 dogs placed with families in Utah 10 years ago and now we have 60. After June of this year, we will have 75. Koroulis said there are 17 families in Davis Country who have guide dogs but the dogs are all over the state of Utah from one end to the other." She said June is when the new puppies come to Utah and those dogs who have been with a family for the past year, go back to the Guide Dog headquarters in San Rafael, Calif., for more acute training before they are matched with a blind person. Two families received puppies and since then the church has been used for club meetings and the weekly 4-dogs are allowed in the church building at all times. The combined finishes of the team five-memb- er members are tabulated and the team that has the lowest score wins. Team members are also eligible for individual prizes.
