Show ,J"" ' ' d'1'- ..fv - Tuesday, March 19, 1991 9 Lakeside er war By DONNA BROWN Standard-Examine- ,, ,r ,- u correspondent LAYTON Off to the Great White North, folk musician Marcia Knorr set out to warm the hearts of Eskimos in February with her charm, a banjo and guitar. Although Knorr spent 6 Vi years in Anchorage, Alaska, before moving to Lay-to- n ' last August, her adventuresome spirit was left hungry to explore Americas last great frontier Last month, through an Artist in Schools program, sponsored by the Alaska State Council oh the Arts, Knorr spent three weeks sharing her talent with Alaskan natives. The program, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, allowed her to spend one week in Anchorage and two weeks in the remote village of St. ' Marys. . St. Marys, a town of about 500 near the Yukon River, is populated almost entirely by Yupik Eskimos, The singer, songwriter and musician strongly believes in the trading and sharing of songs that has carried so many through hundreds of years and generations. She focuses on folk for its harmony, history and flexibility. Besides, she. said, I like to be able to pitch it in any damn key I want. : While living in Anchorage, Knorr female folk played with a three-piec- e band called the Barbwire Twisters. The group specialized in fractured folk and esoteric songs." They joyfully taunted audiences with songs like Dead Puppies and The PMS Marching Band. She said people in Alaska were liberal and accepting of ' . their twisted humor. I played childrens music in addition to my tacky, tasteless songs of motherhood, she said. . Knorr worked with elementary schools to coordinate entertaining and educational activities. She incorporated music' into the system and found it a valuable teaching tool. ' Word of her talent got out and she was called to schools all over the city to perform. Knorrs curiosity for what lay beyond the ice and snow across the nations largest state prompted her to put her name Heritage Senior Citizens Center, 562 S. 1000 East, 5 Clearfield, ftf 773-706- WM - mZa " , r ; ; I r I -- ' ' ' - y .. - i f r Income tax assistance for senior citizens is available at the center. What Color should the walls be? ; Its a good idea to pick a whole house color scheme to coordinate the house, especially if your rooms are opened up to the main part of the home. ; Its not necessary to have all the rooms the same color just because the carpet is the same throughout. : A house with gray carpet, for example, blue walls in the livd can have ing room; peach and white with gray accents in the kitchen; pink and gray in the girls bedroom; blue, green, and gray in the boys bedroom; and black, gray and white in the master bedroom. They espouse the belief that Americas most serious problems stem from the breakdown of family and neighborhood structures. Their books; Teaching ;Chifdren Joy, Teaching Children Responsibility, and Teaching Children Sensitivity" have spawned a national organization called Ho'mebase. The organization involves following a program called parenting by objec- -. schoolers in the home, is based on one of the Eyres books, Teaching Children V Joy, written in 1980. Most people want a sure thing. Either stick with oranges (peach, coral, salmon) or pinks (mauves or roses), but dont mix them. You are crossing undertones, which are either pink or orange, and you wont be happy with the final product. Because both colors are so popular, there are patterns coming out (hat have both colors in them. If this is the case, a room can be pulled together very well if there is a combination of pinks and peaches in the wallpaper or upholstery.1' Keeping the color scheme on the lighter side will help you be able to work with other colors in other rooms. Its when the colors get too dark that they are difficult to work with. A dark brown carpet can only be used with a few other colors in a room, where . - - - : , - at , a tan carpet can be used with a larger variety of colors. For example: tan and peach kitchen; tan and forest green living room; tan and rose for the girls bed-- . room; tan, and light blue for the boys bedroom; and tan and maroon for the master bedroom. If the house had dark brown carpet, you Can use light yellow, peach, tan or a light gold color and get a room, but unlike tan, it doesnt mix as well with other colors. Neutrals are white, and blacks in decorating. They are not considered colors because they are not found on the color wheel. Just because theyre not. found on the color wheel, though, doesnt mean theyre not useable in your decorating scheme. The opposite is true. A black and white room, or black and peach room is very dramatic, and not fit for some peoples palate of rooms, but can be used very effectively. off-whit- ' - e, . . A bathroom would like very striking in black and peach, with olive green accents, however, I wouldnt use it in the kitchen or living room; It all depends on ; ; ; ; your personality. Different levels in a home do not necessarily need to be done in the same coL; or scheme unless the doors all open to a family room downstairs, or a common room. If each room is separate on another level, each room can have their own scheme. When it comes to choosing a color scheme for the whole house, pick a color you are going to be able to work with light enough to add other colors for other rooms and dark enough to be able to keep clean without irritation. Plan ahead in your decorating choices so you wont have to redecorate in five years. Melaine Ann Mallory is an area resident with a degree in interior decorating.
