Show Lakeside Review, Tuesday, June 5, 1990 Lakeside Opinion North Valley City? Sorry , names just too mundane Vgs--T Bob Peck Andrea Harter Ruth Vaughan North Valley City? I figure if youre going to create the largest city in Utah, you might want to come up with a name that sticks in peoples minds. The name North Valley City has as much indentity as an extra in a George Romero film. In case you missed it, some Jim Duckworth Should Davis become one big city? ' Recently several Davis County mayors discussed the idea of incorporating all of Davis County into one city with a suggested name of North Valley City. The consolidation would create a city of 184,000, the largest in the state, and according to some, it would save money to consolidate services. The Lakeside Review asked area residents their opinion of the idea. I think it Ruth Vaughan, Layton would be a can of worms. When you combine youve got distinct cities trying to come together and they do well (on their own). If you try to put all of the needs just of Layton alone into one big city the people would get lost. They are having a problem in West Valley City right now. We own a store down there and when it got broken into one time it took police 35 minutes to might save money, but if there wa a vote tomorrow I wouldnt vote for it b :cause I dont know enough about it. I dont think people know enouj ;h about what exactly they want to do. I aj ree it is always good to look at a change bf cause if you think something cant get better than you are pretty Tjiey will have to have public hearings and get some valid opinions on the idea. The police forces and fire departments have to be looked at real closely. I dont like Lee Conover, Layton the idea. We finally build us a tax ease here in Layton and now we have to scatter it around the county? No I dont' like that idea at all. Maybe if we get cooperation between police forces now things can stay like they are. I would vote against it unjess they show that it is a better idea than what ; Street talk I dont know Andrea Harter, Layton I like that idea. We moved to Davis County because we heard they had the best education system. If this is the best Id hate to see the worst. if think if the money saved by incorporating could be put back into the educational system then I am for it. We have lived in five states and this is by far I the worst education system. Bob Peck, Layton I dont like it because things wont remain the same. We have been living here for over 20 years and we get along just fine. It would screw up our payment of our bills. We are of the older set and maybe if I was younger I would be for it, but Im not. We get fixed in our ways after so long. Jim Duckworth, Layton I think it closed-minde- d. weve got now. representatives of the Davis Council of Governments have brought up the idea of ultimately (probably a long way down the road) incorporating all of the countys towns and cities into one city currently being to as North Valley City. The reason being that one large city can be run more efficiently than 15 smaller ones. You have only one police department and police chief, one fire department and fire chief, one city manager, one public works director and so on. The new city would become the largest incorporated entity in Utah with more than 170,000 people. Salt Lake City currently has an estimated population of 166,000. And with the way Davis County is growing, it is realistic to assume that if North Valley City does come into existence, it will be the states largest Regardless of whether creating this large city is feasible, I would think we could come up with a better name than North Valley re-fer- ed City. First it is not really geographaccurate. While Davis County is basically part of the same valley as Salt Lake City, there is an outcropping in the Wasatch range that has kept the two entities separate. While West Valley City borders Salt Lake, North Valley City would have a mountain in between. Besides, do we really want the - citys name to revolve around - Salt Lake? If we are going to be the states largest city, why dont we try and create our own identiically I . fclTfcoDUeWm Ittg MftDg lfc4oeo Of FMA 15 lIFFeW. sgCTtet ) ( 0 To . .BGokjBerreR MVL ty. The most logical name would just be Davis City. Morgan seems to do fine with both the county tmi'&tigl raww'W! View point Andy Howell Davis County editor and the county seat having the same name, so I doubt it would cause much confusion here. And what about one of the 15 names we already have? I did a little unscientific re- search and found the most unique name we probably have for an existing city in Davis County is Bountiful. Despite the fact that there was a movie made about a trip to Bountiful (Texas), I couldnt find any other Bounti-ful- s in the road atlas. I also couldnt find another South Weber, Woods Cross or North Salt Lake, but there are plenty of names that begin with south, wood and north. The most common name for a community in this country that exists in our county is Clinton. Nineteen states have Clintons. The largest Clinton is in Iowa, with a population of 33,000, while the smallest Clinton is in Minnesota, where 622 people live. Centerville, or Centreville, came in second with 14; Farmington followed with nine; there are six West Points in the country; and five Syracuses. No matter which name we picked out of the existing cities, aside from Syracuse, we would end up being the biggest city with that name in the nation. Syracuse, N.Y. has a population around 180,000. If we dont want to use one of the existing city names, then Im sure we could find something unique in the countys history or geography that would lend itself to a proper name for Utahs largest city. If we name it North Valley City, we will be swallowed up in anonymity. If thats the case, then we might as well call it John Doe City. Colleen Naylor Clearfield Paper should list officers sooner Im writing in behalf of North Davis Junior High in response to an article appearing in your Youth Section of the Lakeside Review, from May 22, 1990. As a new student to North Davis Junior High this year, I eagerly awaited a list announcing the officers and cheerleaders. I was told that if you were having problems adjusting, you went to these people. But, issue after issue, I never saw a list from our school announcing our officers and cheerleaders, only lists from all the other schools. Now, the school year is almost over and we have chosen our new officers and cheerleaders. Please try to announce these people from our school at the beginning of the year, next school year, so others dont have to go through what I had to this year. Jeni Reed Clearfield Students need a low-flunch choice at In recent times, people have made a big deal out of getting children to eat healthier, lowrfat diets. The health class at my school emphasizes to students that they should cut their fat, caloric and cholesterol intake. And yet in this same school, the lunch served is some of the most unhealthy they can eat! Most foods served in my school, and Im sure in others, are loaded with fat, cholesterol and dripping with grease. Also, an ala carte line is offered, but what is served? Doughnuts, french fries, and milkshakes! Besides, we cant leave campus to t, get a healthy meal. I watch my diet, and for the reasons stated above, I have had to skip lunch for the last term and a half. I am tired of hearing about the importance of eating better, and not having a low-fchoice at school. low-fa- at 3 I think that next year an addition to school lunches should be a salad bar where students can eat. Brian Barlow Clearfield Dont litter - put trash Save lives: Reduce where it belongs meat consumption I am disgusted. On Memorial Day we drove into the mountains for a picnic. Everywhere we went or stopped we saw garbage. Many people throw garbage out of their car windows and dont give it a second thought. They clutter the side of the road but not their car. At the picnic grounds there were a lot of beer, cans and other garbage around and there were even garbage cans provided a few feet away. This is not the first time I have noticed how bad this situation is but I am fed up. There are fines for littering but have you ever heard of anyone being fined? No. These laws need to be enforced more heavily then maybe some of the littering would be stopped. Maybe we would be less likely to " litter knowing that others have been fined and we could be too. Some people may get angry if they are fined but they will probably take a minute to find a trash can before throwing it on the There are many ijeasons why not eat jneat, or at least reduce our consumption to 10 percent or less of total di-we should t et. jou Davis County Courthouse 28 E.
