Show 4 Lakeside Review, Tuesday, March 20, 1990 O Lakeside Syracuse appoints curator and museums and anyplace that might turn up pieces to the puzzles of the past. Willie said many of the items that belong in the Syracuse museum are not valuable antiques, but artifacts rich in history that will help preserve the citys past. History buff collecting artifacts By DONNA BROWN Lakeside Review SYRACUSE History is in the making in Syracuse as newly appointed historical curator Allen Willie combs the state for artifacts that reflect the citys past for future generations. Willie, appointed curator by the city council in February, is collecting items that pertain to the history of Syracuse for a city museum. The museum will be included in the plans for a proposed $600,000 to $700,000 city hall. My idea of this museum is that I dont want to put a lot of stuff in it that doesnt pertain to the city of Syracuse, Willie said. Willie is a computer analyst in the Directorate of Distribution at Hill Air Force Base. He has a bachelors degree in history with a minor in anthropology from Weber State College. He has helped the city historical committee as a researcher for about two years. Ive spent about the past 12 years doing family research, he said. He was in Farmington going through old newspapers when he started noticing articles about Syracuse. Even though my roots dont go back to here, I was really very interested. The history buff He will soon begin canvassing the city and approaching Syracuse families in an attempt to get descendants of the original Syracuse pioneers to put together a family display and brief history moved to Syracuse in 1951. He attended first, second and third grades at Syracuse Elementary School. He left Syracuse and 1972. They have three children, Andrea Maria Gardner, 22; Kris- tina, 18 and Bettina Maria, 17. The Willies house is adorned with family paintings and pictures and artifacts that hint at the familys rich past. In the center of the Willies coffee table is a plate dated to 1910 from the old Syracuse Mercantile Company. He also owns a token dated 1901 from the Syracuse Canning Factory and an old milk can dated 1932 from the Joe Thurgood farm. Although the city already has an admirable display of artifacts, Willie said he hopes to be able to accumulate enough artifacts from the Northern Utah area to be able to trade other city museums for articles that relate directly to Syracuse history. While he feverishly scans books and manuals for logistics tips on forming a museum he said he hopes the supply of artifacts will continue to grow so things can fall into place if the city hall and new museum are approved and funding is available.
