Richard Myers is president of Myers Mortuaries in Ogden, Layton and Kaysville. While people seldom go through life without losing a loved one, grief is not something that can be easily resolved. After the death of a child, 70 percent of couples experience marital difficulties, and 35 percent of mental illness can be traced to unresolved grief over a death. Mrs. Myers said a study done on teens in alcohol and drug rehabilitation showed that 25 percent to 50 percent experienced a death or loss of a significant person during childhood or adolescence. Grief has its physical effects. A research center took blood chemistry and hormone level samples of grieving families. These levels did not go back to normal until after 18 months, if the death had been expected. If unexpected, the body chemistries were abnormal for two to three years, she said. Victims of grief have a high probability of contracting other ailments: heart disease, stroke, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, pneumonia, and eating and sleep disorders. Accidents are also common. A neighbor of ours lost her husband and thought she was doing so well, but she wrecked three cars that year, Mrs. Myers said. Tranquilizers may mask the pain and sorrow but stop the person from resolving those feelings. Mrs. Myers related one story of a widow who became addicted to tranquilizers. After finally getting off of them, it took 3W years to work through what could have taken just two years. Myers said the tasks of mourning involve accepting the reality of what has happened; experiencing the pain or grief; then adjusting to an environment without the loved one. Finally, the victim withdraws emotional energy from the deceased person and reinvests it in other relationships. The rites of a viewing, funeral and burial help in the bereavement process, Myers said. The viewing provides a visual confrontation to help the person accept that the death has occurred. In this case, a picture really is worth a thousand words. In instances where there is no Support groups make coping easier Support groups exist to help free, and meetings are held at the a loved one. After the funeral comes the adjustment period, with feelings of yearning and sorrow. Society says, When are you going to get over this? Society feels we should be over it in three months, said Mrs. Myers. Yet these feelings cannot be hurried, she said. Those who want to help should be nonjudgmental. The first thing you say is nothing, Mrs. Myers said. You are a listener. They can also help by providing these five things for the mourner: A support system.
