Show SA Lakeside Review, Wednesday, December 28, 1988 Attorney to help prosecute 2 charged with killing student By MARJORIE CORTEZ Standard Examiner Davis Bureau Carvel Harward, chief criminal deputy of the Davis County Attorneys Office, will assist the Millard County Attorneys Office in the prosecution of two men charged with capital murder in the death of a Southern Utah State College student. Millard County Attorney ren Peterson said during a telephone interview that Harward was recommended by the Statewide Association of Prosecutors, commonly known as SWAP. I wanted someone who was more experienced in capital crimes and capital prosecution, Peterson said. Harward will help Peterson in the prosecution of Michael Anthony Archuleta, 26, and Lance Conway Wood. The two men are accused of killing Gordon Ray Church, a SUSC student. Churchs badly beaten body was found near Kanosh on Nov. 23. Archuleta and Wood had both been paroled after serving prison Harward also has been a prosecutor in Salt Lake City, Chicago and Louisiana. While working on the Salt Lake County Major Offenders prosecution team, Harward participated in the prosecution of Julio Gary Valdez, who was convicted of two counts murder for killing a of unwed mother and her infant son. He has participated in two othcases. er Peterson said Millard County will reimburse Davis County for Harvards time. SWAP enabled the Millard first-degr- death-penal- ty County Attorneys Office to take advantage of Harvards expertise in the use of forensic evidence. Though Millard Countys deputy attorneys are competent trial attorneys, Peterson said the office lacks experience in capital prosecution. Its certainly good for Millard County, Peterson said. In a case like this, the standard professional practice is to use a team rather than a single prosecutor." The preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled Jan. 24 and 25. Millard County will lead the prosecution, Peterson said. ld GINGERBREAD HOUSE, displayed and Curtis Niederhau- created by lOth-grad- er a competition held at Clearfield High before Christmas. ser, placed first Claims of sexual in sentences.
