Oscar winner Sally Field from Places in the Heart is equally as funny, and good, as Lilah Kxyt-sica New Jersey housewife and mother of three who aches to make people laugh. Tom Hanks, still hot from his latest box office hit, Big, isi emotionally unstable comic Steven Gold in Punchline, a unique film about the efforts behind standup comedy. Hanks as Gold IS gold as he turns in another weighty performance, this time as a medical student drop-owhose life, literin balance of being the ally, hangs ut r. real She credits her comic growth, knee-slappe- to the noble effort of Gold, who falls for the plain wrapped (and married) Field. But as good as Hanks and Field are, and they are truly entertaining, without the supporting cast and their everyday dilemmas this movie would resemble an HBO comedy special. Mark Rydell, as comedy club owner Romeo, is one of the necessary and better supporting elements behind this films success. Rydell, who has not appeared on the big screen for a long time, (remember The Long Goodbye) is the resentful club owner who wants to hitch himself to the promising future of one of his stars. However, the character of John Krytsick, Lilahs saintly husband, is the one everyone cant help but love. Krytsick, played suberbly by Raising Arizona convict John Goodman, is the impatient husband who trys to squelch his wifes hunger for nighttime comedy and return his family life to normal. Other strengths behind this film include the directing efforts of David Seltzer, the same man e hit responsible for the Columbia Pictures photo Sally Field and Tom Hanks star piring standup comics who learn teen-lov- Lucas. as two as- a lot about themselves and the frustrations of the world of comedy in Punchline. not-so-fun- ny Songwriters to meet CLEARFIELD The Utah Songwriters will host a monthly Songwriters Showcase in the area on the first Thursday at 8 p.m. The Nov. 3 meeting will be at Nield Brothers Club, 743 N.
