ARLENE HAMBLIN Lakeside Review correspondent When SYRACUSE I didnt find a little candy bar in the mailbox I knew something was drastically wrong. I hope that dear sweet lady knows that her little loaves of bread '.homemade whole-wheme through my morning got sickness with my last baby. Thats Nancy Dollmeyer, Rural' Carrier of the Year for Utah, speaking of just two of- her people along Rural Route 1 in at - Syracuse. Nancy was chosen by a com- mittee. of fellow employees across the state at the state union convention last month. Any employer may nominate someone for the award and all nominations are considered at the convention. The award is unique as it comes when your work and efforts are recognized by your peers, Dollmeyer said. This is a award and I feel most grateful, she said. An employee of the postal system since 1977, she took time off to serve a mission for the LDS Church in Germany. Upon her return, her father, who has been a mail carrier in Layton for 18 years, urged her to lake the test to become a 7 mail handler. "',"'71 She has served the people of Route l in Syracuse since- 1980n i Her route takes her to 600 homes and businesses. She delivers 1,800 to 2,000 pieces of mail and 500 to 1,000 magazines each day except Sundays and holidays, and covers , My favorite thing of all to deliver is mission calls. When I deliver pay checks, they are usually already spent, but when-ita mission call its pure excitement." Ive gotten to know my people so well that I know when they are waiting for a special piece of mail, she said. Sometimes I take the time to give them a quick early morning call before school or work and say Elder, are you expecting a letter from Church Headquarters? I case my mail from 6:30 a.m. until about 9 a.m. and so I usually tell them they can come and get it if they dont want to wait till I make the rounds, Nancy said. g Ive made some friends and I want each one of life-lon- s my people to know that I really care about their mail, she said. Many people dont realize that rural carriers drive their own vehicle. When she had passed the test and been assigned to a e route, in 1978, she flew to Cincinnati and purmail chased her own brand-nethe where the at factory jeep U.S. Postal Service gets theirs. I picked it up on Friday and delivered mail in it here on Monday. It has 100,000 miles on it but it still gets me there. My jeep has character, she said pointing to the scars it incurred when a roof at the back of the Post Office landed on it. My jeep saved my life. If it hadnt been there the roof would have landed on me, she City carriers get paid by the hour, but she gets paid by the day, she said. Its a real incentive to get to work early, case my mail, get on the road and get finished early so I can get home to my kids. Her children range in ; age from Amy ReNae to Richard Lee, 9- months,- with Karl William and Tracy Jeanne, 2. Husband, Edward Lee, works for Hercules in Magna and the Dollmeyers make their home in Layton. Because she keeps on the move in her urge to finish up promptly, she has devised her own public relations campaign to make her people feel they have a special friend in the little red, white, and blue jeep. full-tim- w Families in home schools will meet - . LAYTON - said. pe Ah :V U oV : A. f i I Nancy Dollmeyer . Families who participate in home schools have planned a activity in Layton Park on Aug. 20. Beginning at 9 a.m. the Saturday event is hoping to bring together families who teach their children in their homes. According to one mother, there are approximately 21 families from Bountiful to Layton who have home schools. Families should plan to socialize and then have lunch at noon. Each family is to bring their own picnic lunch. Other activities are being planned by those who belong to the Home School Association. District leader Deborah Recksick can provide a schedule of future activities. She may be 5 or questions phoned at directed to Wendy Murdock at ( i She wrote a poem to introduce herself, declaring her willingness to serve and asking their cooperation in return. From time to time she leaves other poems to inform and delight. She goes through 100 stamps in two days saving her patrons a trip to the Post Office. Nancy is an enthusiastic supporter of the E.I. team, an employee involvement process in which management and carriers meet to discuss ways of improving the Postal Service. At Christmastime, Nancy, after a full day of delivering mail, makes a few deliveries of her d own. She takes cookies to 18 elderly friends on her route.
