Ive been mad about it all week, said Layton coach Brad Hawkins. I dont think its fair for kids to work their buts off all season long to take first in their region, and then be forced to play anothe er team to get into the state tournament, Hawkins said. But the Layton coach says his team will be ready to play. Ive been real proud of these kids all year. They are probably not the most talented team Ive had, but theyve got a good attitude and they work hard. Weve also had good leadership from players like Larry Cantarella and first-plac- B.J. Lovell. And theyve been swinging their bats well the last few games. I think weve got a good shot against Orem, but well have to field better than we did against Box Elder in our last game, Hawkins said. Roy also faces a tough oppo- nent in Bountiful. The Braves handed Roy their first defeat in the state 4A tournament last year and Bountiful has several players back from that team. In Fridays final round of action, Davis also lost to East 1 to knock the Darts out of playoff contention. The two overtime periods were scoreless and the two teams were forced into a shootout, which Layton won. Its tough to lose a game like that on a shootout, but I thought Layton played a good game, Roy coach Scott Snelson said. They had a lot of shots on goal.
