Show 2B Lakeside Review, Wednesday, April 27, 1988 what I could eat. I took a lunch to school. I hated that. I had sandwiches, cheese and fruit, and could buy milk there. I liked that because I felt more like the other kids. I wanted to be like the other kids. For the most part, she manages her diabetes well, but does have problems with reactions. Its an awful feeling when you come out of them. I have so Diabetes , From IB They can do it and we wont have to worry about calling an ambulance. She is the only family member who has the disease. For the last several years, she attended a special camp. Camp Holiday Trails, Charlottesville, Va., hosts children with many different health problems for two weeks. You see people with all sorts of things, and you feel sorry for them because youre not as bad off as they are. Close friendships are formed as each gives the other support. If someone is sick, you take over their responsibilities and they do the same for you. I still write to them, she said. She and Mark Slater, of Clearfield, are currently working with Debbie Oman of the North Davis Chapter of the Utah Diabetes Association to form a youth support group, and are looking for people to contact We dont always have to have a lecture, she said. We can go out for pizza, go skating and have fun activities. As long as we know theres somebody out there who has the same problems and difficulties, that you can talk with, thats really what you need. Somebody to give you support, besides your parents. As for Foxs future, she plans on becoming a doctor and specializing in diabetes. She carries a grade point average of 3.95 to help her achieve her near-perfe- ct goal. Mark Slater is also the only member of his immediate family who has diabetes. One uncle and a third cousin have adult onset diabetes. Following an illness of a week, he dehydrated rapidly and was taken to Clearfield Clinic. Doctors there told his mother he had all the signs of diabetes and hospitalized him. On Dec. 11, 1976, he was diagnosed as a Type I juvenile diabetic. His mother said, I heard diabetics have severe stomach pains. He had none. His blood sugar level was over one thousand, with 0 being normal. Im lucky, said Mark. I take one shot a day. I took two a day at first, and now I eat just about everything, except for (stuff out 80-12- 'of) the candy machines at school. As a student at Clearfield High School, he stays active. He is able to know when an insulin reaction is about to occur, and leaves class to go to his locker for a granola ; bar or candy. Orange juice helps for a short time, but more carbo- ; hydrates are needed to balance his blood sugar. I get spacy, shaky or lose track of whats going on, and get an uneasy feeling in my stomach, explains mark. The teachers are understanding and helpful. He also keeps candy in his car and his pocket for emergencies. Peer pressures at school are not a problem for him. Everyone who knows me knows Im a diabetic. Sometimes my friends are too overprotective. Its been a good way of finding out who cares for me. Mark plays soccer, is active in drama and the Dance Company, a group of three boys and 18 girls, directed by Jaynee Weltie. Shes a big help," he said. "She has relatives with diabetes, and checks to see if Im okay. In January, he played the lead role in The RedHouse, appeared in the Clearfield High School dance concert, and participated in a musical review. He works part time for the Nice Corp. His father is a Clearfield City policeman. Dad doesnt hover over me like Mom does, said Mark. When you find out your child has diabetes, its a shock, said Mrs. Slater. Then you realize its okay. You must deal with it. My thought is that it could have been more serious. He could have had cancer, cystic fibrosis or worse. Mrs. Slater said that the doctors wanted the shots divided and given twice a day, but he did so much better with one, it was decided to keep to that regimen. He takes 20 ccs of regular insulin and 60 of NPH daily. I used to bake cookies about once a week, said Mrs. Slater, but I feel it is too much of a temptation. He has fresh fruits for snacks instead. The biggest change at home was to keep snack foods on hand to have in a hurry. We always need jelly and orange juice, things we didnt usually keep on hand." Expenses are high. One bottle of 5 days, insulin, which lasts cost $15; regular insulin, $15;" $200; Chem strips, (to check blood), $27 per 50; needles, $17 per 100 or $1.90 for 10; Keto sticks (for urine checks) $6 per 25. The pan caught on fire and the house was filled with smoke when her husband came in. I wasnt even aware of it Combe Castle & Deli at Layton Hills Mall. He can have two pieces in exchange for a snack, which is listed on his exchange list, said Mrs. Slater. He follows the diabetic diet, which is a fitness dietmenus planned from the list. Foods on the same list are interchangeable, because in the specified quantites, they provide Foods allowed on the diabetic meal plan are broken down into groups called exchange lists, with approximately the same amounts of carbohydrates, fats and protein. The diet is very similar to the Weight Watchers diet A teenager using the meal plan could still go to McDonalds, for instance, and have a hamburger and fries, knowing that the hamburger has 263 calories and is ' equivalent to two bread, 1 medi- um fat meat and one fat exchange on the diet. The french fries, which contain 220 calories, 26 grams of carbohydrate, three of protein, 12 of fat, and 109 milligrams of sodium. They replace two bread and two fats on the exchange list. The milkshake should be avoided and replaced with a dietetic drink. Diabetics are advised to read all food labels carefully and should avoid foods with sugar, honey, corn syrup or dextrose. Being - overweight increases insulin needs and complicates control of diabetes. Dietetic foods arent required and may not be correct for die diabetics use. When eating out, they must substitute appropriate foods and portions from the meal plan prescribed. A serving of bread, crackers, fruit juice or milk at regular mealtime will help to prevent a period of low sugar when a meal is delayed. For information about foods prepared fast-foo- abetes.
