Show A forum for opinion Review Wednesday December 3, 1986 i Runaround doesn' clean up garbage Its called the runaround. One resident, tired of seeing State Highway 193 cluttered with debris that hampers traffic flow, tried to instigate corrective action, only to contact several different city and state departments to no avail. But the responsibility for cleaning the trash from the highway lies with the Utah Department of Transportation, since the route is a state artery. Highway 193 is the main route to the North Area Refuse Disposal landfill and is often the dumping ground for trash that doesnt seem to make it to the landfill. Those hauling trash to the landfill should also be responsible enough to see that debris doesnt fly from their vehicles. A state code requires garbage be secured on all dumpso law ing vehicles, enforcement agencies need to see the code is observed. well-travel- ed by area law enforcement agencies. In our view The debris creates a nuisance for traffic traveling on the road and vehicles attempting to maneuver around the debris also create a hazard. Lillian Ackley, upset with the situation, called Layton about the problem. Officials told her to contact the Utah Department of Transportation, who in turn referred her to the Utah State The state code reads no vehicle (carrying loads) shall be driven or moved on any public highway, unless the load is suitably fastened or confined. The UDOT official commented that there is a serious garbage spill at least once a month. The state department trys to deal with the problem, he said, but it would take several days a week to keep the road clear of debris. A Layton police official said the department does not have the manpower to follow the trucks to the landfill. The ordinance needs enforcing and the road needs periodic cleaning. But who will do Highway Patrol. According to Layton officials, warning signs that say loads must be covered have been posted. Occasionally, city crews go and clean the area of trash that has fallen from trucks, but the city crews shouldnt it? have to tackle the problem. Its the old runaround. According to a UDOT offilack it is of a enforcement And the situation remains cial, of the covered trash ordinance unchanged. Henderson Roy Keep interest earned on home tax money Review editor: For those of you who have recently had to come up with that money for your property taxes in Clearfield and would have preferred to have spent it on. a nicer Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas present for your family you might profit to remember just who was in Clearfield City Council voicing their preferences which resulted in rising your property tax your local banks were! The same banks that advertise on television as being interested in your best interests and help- - Letter policy set for paper ing families and their businesses and wanting to serve YOU!! I wonder why? Is it because when the homeowner makes a part monthly house payment is taxes and insurance which our local banks can accrue interest on all year while it sits in their bank? Did the banks push for what was best for the community or what was best for them? And why does the federal government assume that those of us with FHA loans need banks to collect, and hold are they our taxesinsurance insinuating that we homeowners are not responsibile enough to save to money in our own savings accounts during the year and accrue the interest ourselves rather than a bank? Well, anyway, I guess what is done is done, but it does bother me that banks are allowed so much influence in our lives and on bodies of government that are making decisions for us. I hope that most people know that if you have a conventional home loan you can put that taxinsurance part of your monthly housepayment in your own savings account and accrue the interest instead of being benevolent and giving it to your local banks. This is the classic The rich get richer and the poor get poorer! In conclusion, let us remember safe. Aluminum 'culprit' in Alzheimer's? Review editor: My mother has had Alzheimers for over 13 years and is totally incapacitated. Her physical health is excellent but her mind is gone. She can no longer feed herself, walk, talk or do anything except sit. She has flashes of memory but cannot communicate legibly. The years of lost living are a great tragedy for her and for her family. It can go on for many years because people dont die of Alzheimers; they die of forgetting to breath or forgetting to cough. What is causing this great tragedy among the elderly? It is getting worse and is costing billions of dollars annually. It is the leading cause of disability among the elderly and in many cases also strikes the young. I firmly believe the culprit to be the overuse and misuse of aluminum. Numerous studies with animals show that behavior and memory are affected as aluminum levels increase in the brain. Autopsies have shown large deposits of aluminum in the brains of Alzhei-mer- s patients. rin, antacids, bleached flour, Studies show that aluminum adversely affects the transcription of genetic information by binding to the chromatin of the neuron. People with reduced kidney function are more affected by aluminum buildup in their bodies. Because aluminum is reactive to both alkaline and acid substances it can leach into many things. Aluminum poisoning can produce acidosis which destroys red blood cells creating a condition similar to anemia. People will bruise or get nosebleeds easier. Authorities tell us there is no prevention and no cure for but I dont believe this. I know people who rid their bodies of aluminum and in turn have cleared up kidney problems and chronic illness. We find aluminum in many things: deodorants, baking power, nondairy creamers, buffered aspi to treat drinking water so as to reduce turbidity and cloudiness. s Davis County water has levels of Clearfield aluminum above what I feel is this special interest groups (local preferences. banks) self-servi- Dixie .... g. b v' mberlpnnfc GROOMING PARLOR & PET SUPPLIES Heivl it CAT GROOMING We do ail breed dog grooming. 45 E.
