Many high schools across the :naiion now have their own weight programs. - One local high school, Clear-fieihas its own weight room e and its own strength training coach, Brett Lund. HJjund says without hesitation iCle'arfleld's weight room is one of iflte' best in the state, the high school puts that room to good use. '.Clearfield has integrated its weight room into its regular School curriculum as a teaching "station and now can push 0 students each through day. - ' Women have also come into 'their own with weights: As above, Ms. Shcndow holds a national record and Clearfield bodybuilder Vickie Clausse is one of the top newcomers in Utah bodybuilding. Lund also says the weight training class is popular among Clearfield High School's girls. One myth is, if you lift weights, youll become muscle bound. , "To become muscle bound' you have to be doing something wrong, said Lund. "A person becomes muscle bound because he doesnt use a full range of motion when performing a movement, or because he exercizes only one muscle group and doesn't work the opposing muscle group. Another myth is that lifting .'weights causes a loss of flexibility. ; But Lund and Jan Shendow, owner of the Rocky Mountain d 'Athletic Center in Roy and of Lynda pointed to studies .wjiich show that when stretching exercizes are combined with weight training, flexibility is hus-.ban- with a good flexibility when coupled stretching routine. Contrary to what appears in this cartoon, lifting weights can actually help increase One myth that often scares women away from weight training is they are afraid if they work out with weights they will begin to look like the Incredible Hulk. Ninety-plu- s percent of women will not be able to develop the kind of muscles they are afraid of. Even though all men and all women have both male and female hormones in their bodies, most women dont have enough male hormones to develop massive muscles. If a woman sees she is developing beyond what she likes, she can always stop lifting weights or lift differently. Muscles are only there because people want them to be, and it takes a lot of work to develop them, Jan Shendow said.
