number of tile tha shortcomings and encouraging the people to take home with them from the conference the spirit and determination of making improvement pres horsley followed along the same line and lie he announced some new features which the stake authorities desired the people to accept and carry into practice as they have been designed to make it possible for the saints to live better lives it if accepted one of themis them is the appointing of the first thursday evening of each month home night by which is meant that on that evening families will gather together in the home and discuss the things pertaining to the gospel and instruct each other 0 morning land was sung as a ducate by prof and mrs W lenzi mcallister and elder mckay was the next speaker he be ganby gunby commenting upon the summary of the stake report which had been handed him by the presiding bishop prior to his coming to attend the conference and lie ie read the complimentary things said therein about the box elder stake lie he stated that the report showed this stake to be one of the best in tile the church ho he stated that he believed in scattering a few roses among the living so he wanted the people to know just how highly the work they are doing is appreciated by the general authorities ties he then launched out on a discourse in which he stated it would be his purpose to show the young people why it is worth their while to support tho the church organizations and appreciate the gospel he related an incident in the ilves lives of hini himself self and a friend who had chosen different paths and the friend is today a successful businessman in this state they came together recently and exchanged con faunces and in the discussion the friend stated that the reason he did not take an active part in tile the church was because it had become too orthodox and did not satisfy his emotions and longings as much as did nature when v han lie he goes into the mountains and communes with her elder mckay admitted that i the reason given by his friend gave him a new thought a new aspect of tile the gospel and the church organization and since the incident he had pondered it carefully in his mind and had come to some conclusions ile he stated that it is Inherent in man to desire the companionship of man and there are three divisions in which his interest is most directed vis ris educational social and economic the church Is the common ground upon which all classes can meet and in its organization is found the most complete and perfect system of education that has ever been devised yet for instance in every ward there are over a hundred offices and when but one person flits fills but one office ata at a time a amali small army of people are brought into service and by reason ot the responsibility which is thus distributed a small army of workers worker a are studying to become teachers and are thus acquiring knowledge for no person can say that lie he knows a thing unless he can teach it to others lie he related a circumstance lie he had with dr charles Zu belin ln the great economist who was one of the lecturers at the chautauqua some years ago in ogden in which that great man asked him a number of questions relative to the organization and workings of the church and after having it explained hurriedly replied that it was the only system lie he had ever become acquainted with whereby every officer and member feels the responsibility for the good and welfare of the entire community and he wanted to know how the plan could be introduced in every city town and hamlet in the united states the social features which membership A in n the church offers are unile unlimited it led in tho the organizations and quor ams men and women come together often and past part of the work of these organizations is to look after tile the social side there Is in consequence ot of these opportunities a fraternity developed which is par excellence and offers every advantage for wholesome some recreation which builds up As tor for the economic side of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints the world has nothing to equal it take the principle ot of fast offering in the box elder stake there ore are souls it if each person paid five cents per month which is equivalent to 26 2 cents per meal for the two meals one la Is supposed to forego on fast day ind and which is placing tile the cost of the meal at the very lowest estimate the box bos elder stake would re receive enough fast offering to provide all its poor and have a big sum to send to tile the belgians it if the equitable per capita amount which has been fixed at 10 cents per meal or per year were paid the box bos elder stake would collect every year which divided equally among the ten wards of the stake would give to each ward the moral ot ol the observation of this principle is there simply would be no poor in the church the principle works beneficially fici ally three ways because maila man vy by abstaining from food gives his digestive organs an all opportunity to recur recuperate er and rest lie he is not out any money and lie he is blessing someone else the speaker then cited scientific authorities to show li how ow the great thinkers regard man and his relationship to tile the infinite and he said that the latest discovery discover yin in science is that man did not evolve from a lower animal but is what mormonism for the past sa years lia has declared him tobe the offspring of god the eternal father the higher science today teaches that man mall had an existence before he cams came to this earth and that he will exist after he goes hence and elder mckay closed with a remarkable testimony that these things are actually true and the church of jesus christ of f latter day saints offers to every man and woman all that their souls crave in every line of activity and it also offers the plan of salvation obedience to which will bring man back into the presence of god who created him in his own image president stohl made a few closing remarks and the choir sang the anthem jesus of nazareth after which the benediction was wag pronounced by bishop brigham wright the evening session of the confer ence began at and was characterized by an excellent musical program rendered by the second ward choir under the direction of elder shirley horsley assisted by the jacobsen orchestra conductor horsley has las an organization of about seventy five voices and though they have been singing together but a comparatively short while the choir balanced splendidly and followed the director absolutely sol the numbers rendered by the choir were the selections daughter of zion 0 come let Us sing unto the lord and the palms the orchestra rendered one number elder john D peters of the high council was the first speaker and ile he spoke reminiscently contrasting the difference in conditions now and in the beginning when this section was first settled he gave some of his experiences perien ces and observations in tile the world and with prominent people outside of the church who had become impressed by the perfect organization and smooth workings of this great religious body and in closing bore a powerful testimony to the truthfulness of the gospel elder mckay was the concluding speaker and lie he made SERVICE 13 the theme tor for its his remarks related how a young aldr mormon M 0 U girl of Ogden had become infatuated with a stranger and had been induced to accompany him on his journey to the coast they had been married and abid while I 1 the girl experienced a re realization aliza tion ct cf what she had done and at the same time her soul filled with a loathing of the man to whom she had been wed she finally got oft off the train at a certain large city determined to make lier her way back home some way and in walking up the street met a young lady whom she asked to direct her to a respectable spec table place where she might obtain something to eat cat and a place to stay the stranger was a member of the young womans comans christian association and she took the girl to that home where she learned the story the girl asked it if there were any mormon for missionaries in tile the city and was told that there were her new friend volunteering to conduct her to their rooms which she did they too learned the story and communicated with the parents of the girl at and then provided for her comfort comfor t the young lady from the alie Y W C A asked asked the privilege of accompanying the girl to her home hanie as she to seb her safely back with her people t end d she paid transportation out ot of her own pocket provided a berth lor for the two of them on the train brought the girl giri home to her people then departed for her fier hoire on the coast the following day it was at the depot just before she caught the train that elder mckay had met her and learned of the circumstance which he characterized characterize d the most notable illustration of ser vice which had come to his attention in a good while he then took up the matter of protecting the good morals of each ether and stated that all young people should establish a proper ideal a purpose then sail toward it not drift and it if they would do that there would never enter into their minds thoughts that lead many of them to violate the most sacred thing except life urged tile the young people to become masters of themselves so that they can say under any and all circumstances thou or thou shall not for self mastery is the grandest attribute any man can possess urged the single standard of morality among the saints tor for tile the male population should not demand of tile the gentler sex anything they would d not be willing to subscribe to themselves let every boy regard every young lady in the light that lie he regards his own sister and let him resent all improprieties with other boys sisters as he would when they are directed against lits his own sister in closing elder mckay paid the he second ward choir a splendid compliment on oil the excellence of the singing it had done the at at this session was very large and tile the consensus of opinion is that the conference was one of the best |
