Cross country is whatever you make it. It can be walking and sightseeing to racing. It can be for said exercise or telemarking, Doug Driver, assistant manager of Wolfes Sporting Goods in the Layton Hills Mall. Telemarking is a variety of cross country skiing in the back country that uses a telemark turn to go down a hill. Light touring is the cross country seen in Olympic competition and on golf courses on bright Sunday mornings. This type of skiing is based on the desire to traverse a great distance and basically go from point A to point B, said Driver. A marked track or trail often well cared for by touring companies or packed by a few skiers before you is the trademark of touring. ROBERT REGAN and the ski flattens a series of grooves or fishscales, called the pattern, bite into the snow. This gives the needed friction for propulsion. The pattern only covers the middle half of the ski with the tip and tail left smooth for the glide part. When the skier unweights and pulls the ski forward, the camber flexes the ski back to the arch and leaves just the ends in contact with the snow for the glide. Ninety percent of the touring fers. In it the skis are very narrow and light weight, with some of racthe new technology-oriente- d ing skies weighing a mere 600 grams (about 20 oz.). Just a few years ago a high quality racing ski weighed almost twice that. The ski has a severe arch to it, called the camber, that flexes and compresses when the skier is in the kick part of the kick and glide routine of cross country skiing.
