Show 6C Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Juno 12, 1985 Must Keep Jobs, Dollars at Home, Chamber Told LYNDIA GRAHAM teachers salaries alone, without Review Correspondent LAYTON Getting and the increases in facilities. He told the group of businessmen Utah is moving toward a global economy" and the state needs to increase its efforts to develop in that area. One of the best ways to bring dollars into Utah is through tourism, according to Adams. He said several programs were under way to accomplish the goal of getting more people to visit the keep- ing jobs and dollars in Utah wil be; the states challenge of the fu- ture in terms of economic development, according to David W. Adams, executive director of the Department of Community and Economic development for Utah. Utahs high birth rate and resulting educational needs, as well as'the needs created by high unemployment in several of Utahs counties make future economic development a high priority throughout the state, he said. He told the Layton Chamber of Commerce that between 1980 and 1995 Utah would see an increase of 53 percent in school enrollment and would need an additional $25 million for state. Volunteers, especially retired businessmen, could promote the state outside Utah, he said. One airline has already donated a large number of free airline tickets to be used by volunteers who travel out of state to promote and export the potential of the state." The tax dollars brought into Utah by tourists were especially beneficial to the state because, while the revenue generated is substantial and creates new jobs, it does not demand an increase of public services, such as police and fire, nor does it impact the educational system. Japan is an especially profitable market for tourism, Adams said. Japan has 30 million skiers, more than in the United States, and they are the most traveled people in the world. He said skiers are especially e point good, from a of view, since they spend more and stay longer than other types of tourists. By promoting Utah, especially the skiing, in Japan, a large market for tourist dollars will be open to Utah. Another boost to Utah would be the 1996 Winter Olympics, Adams said. He called the winter games a significant economic opportunity and said Utah residents could expect to be proud of the package Utah will present to the Olympic Committee when the candidate sites are submitted on June 15. He said the amount of money spent on international and national advertising by the Olympics would equal more than a hundred years of the states ad stop for meals for up to one hour, day or night, if the street is well lighted at the point of parking, or if in the case of an accident or emergency the driver must leave to obtain assistance. Fire Marshal Cort Galbraith told the City Council the ordinance could eliminate problems with hazardous vehicle carriers, especially those out of Freeport Center who occasionally stop near K mart and nearby stores on Antelope Drive. He said Layton had been lucky so far in that there have been no serious accidents and felt the ordinance would help to pre- vent any. cargo could present a threat to life. The Society also requested consideration of affiliation with the city for financial reasons as well as the the cultural and historical benefits the organization could offer the city. The Society is in the process of printing a comprehensive history of Layton. Doneta Gatherum, a representative of the Historical Society told the Layton City Council the money was needed to begin the printing process of the book, which wiH be sold to the public. Lay-to- She said the Society would like to have affiliation with both Lay-to- n and Kaysville under the Parks and Recreation Department. The use of the city bulk mailing rate, and other considerations would keep dues from becoming prohibitive to members and the Society could be a service to the community, she said. Layton Considers Contract With Bank for City Vehicles A LAYTON with Zions Bank agreement could save the city over $5,000 over the next four years, while providing the city with new police and administrative vehicles. Mark Thomas, representing Zions Bank, said the $94,798 package deal would cost the city a 10 perent interest rate on the price of the vehicles, but that the amount of money which lease-purcha- lease-purcha- r would normally would have been paid in cash for the vehicles could be invested with a guaran- se 1 teed rate of return of 12 percent, creating a profit for the city over the four-yetime span.
