Three Area Skaters Enter Big Event "'.Three members of the Utah Figure Skating Club will leave this weekend for the Pacific Coast Championships at Dublin, Calif., near San Francisco. ""This nine-stameet is the final step toward the 1985 national championships to be held in January in Kansas City. Those in older age groups who finish in the top four at the Pacif te ic Championships would advance to the nationals. Competing at the Pacific Coast meet will be Holly Cook of Bountiful in the Junior Ladies division, Kenna Bailey of Centerville in the Novice Ladies division and Nicole Garrett of Bountiful in the Intermediate Ladies division. Garrett is too young to attend nations. Cook will make her third appearance at the Pacific Coast programs and first overall in competition against skaters from northern California, Nevada and Utah. has competed there as a novice and intermediate. She has won every competition shes entered this season, including the overall championship in the Central Pacific Championships. There she took first place in figures, second in short and long meet-s- he Bailey makes her second ap- -' pearance in the Pacific Coast meet and comes into it as Central Pacific champion after winning figures and placing third in the "" long program. Dont Feed Deer Deer and elk in northern Utah are not likely to be fed this winter, according to Division of Wildlife Resources Acting Director William Geer. Feeding big game animals is not good wildlife management under normal circumstances, says Geer, adding that last winters onslaught could not have been considered normal. Comenting on prospects for another emergency big game feeding program like last winter, Geer says that probably wont happen. We will feed only if conditions become as severe as last years throughout northern Utah, and even that would require another emergency appropriation from the legislature. Cost of the big game feeding program last winter was more than one-ha- lf million dollars. We dont have any money left over from last year, and we dont budget for big game feeding. If the animals get into trouble t again, I dont think we can expect the same kind of national attention we got last year, so the money just wont be there. Unless we get real deep snow, the deer and elk in northern Utah should make if through the winter. Wed prefer that area residents dont do any voluntary feeding of the animals. Feeding concentrates the animals and destroys what little winter range they have left," Geer said. He added that it also makes them more vulnerable to disease, and increases the risk of with cars or of being chased by dogs. colli-sion- ss The real key to managing big game animals is habitat; along the Wasatch Front, that habitat is almost gone, says Geer. The Acting Director says he expects problems in the east bench areas in Salt Lake and Davis counties no matter what the winter is like. We had problems for a long time in these areas and theyre going to stay with us, even in mild winters. To minimize damage caused by the animals, Geer recommends that ornamental shrubs and lower branches of trees be wrapped in burlap to discourage the deer. He says the only permanent solution is to fence yards and keep the deer out The Acting Director admits there is no easy solution to the problem facing big game animals along the Wasatch Front. There is simply not enough food for no place to go. Their trathem ditional winter range has been destroyed and turned into housing developments. Residents who complain about a deer in their backyard perhaps dont realize that they are in the deers backyard. Deer historically used the bench areas . The Clearfield Phantoms swim tjeam played host at the Clearfield municipal pool Saturday, when area swimmers competed in a Utah Swimming Association sanctioned C swimming meet.
