Show ; Page ID North Edition Lakeside Review Wednesday, May 2, 1984 3 Lancers Earn Top Writing Awards LAYTON Three Layton e High students took honors in the and second-plac- e statewide journalism competition sponsored by the Utah Press Women Association., The three awards gave Layton second-plac- e in the contest, the third consecutive year the school has been runner-u- p to first-plac- first-pla- ce Brighton High School. Receiving awards at the asso- ciations annual banquet were SuSan Burke, first-pla- in edito- ce K rial writing; Charlie Cuthbcrt-on- , in feature writing; and Liz Pudlewski, second-plac- e in feature writing. All, three students write for the schools newspaper, the Centurion. School Welcomes Noted Characters Review of these students. The projects were judged on their creativity, the information included and the amount of work that went into them. Todd Smith devised a plan for a computerized planting machine that would allow Johnney Appleseed to plant trees more efficiently. Michelle Oliver discussed the , effects of the peanut and George Washington Carvers research on way of Jifi. DlTier projects were done . on Betsy Ross, Benjamin Franklin, Joseph Smith, Thomas Edison and Amelia Erheart, among others. Each student gave an oral presentation at the awards ceremony. The top six students were within one point of each other, - which demonstrates the keen competition among the participants. Fifth graders Michael Sheen and Allen Meeks dressed up like their favorite famous character for a project demon- V stration of the Excel Program, , 0 .The Excel class program was started in Davis County schools this yifaf as a challenge for gifted students to achieve higher levels of learning. The students, all fifth and sixtlj graders, must be in the top 10 percent of their class, or be nominated to the program by their teacher, parent or principal. ' The k program included six projects based on Benjamin Blooms theory of high level thinking. The students chose a famous person, then completed projects on each level of thinking: recall, comprehension, application, 'analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Their 7 y projects included poems, quiz-zes, games, collage and even in- Z ventions. 1 Sandy Smith, teacher of the special program, said, These children are an amazing group of young people. The class met for an hour after school once a week, and all work and activities H 7 were done in addition to their regular school work.
