Is that really true? L. B. Dear L. B., Brace yourself... fact number one: Utah spends less on education than any other state in the United States m except Ala- - bama and! Mississippi. '' Fact number two: Utah has the larg- est average class size the entire nation. .h BONNIE ,tw0 tid-bi- ts SMITH it is amazing that Utah students scores are quite high nationally; this speaks incredibly well for parents and teachers here. Imagine, however, where our kids could score if we spent what even the middle-rang- e states spend, had smaller classes and gifted well-screen- ed programs! There are plans currently being discussed to raise taxes and alleviate the situation to some extent. Certainly there can be no better investment than our children. If it passes, it will be inter- esting to see how much of it actually filters down to the classroom level. LAYTON North Layton Junior High has selected Kim Rizette and Chuck Hauenstien as Students of the Month for . . , Dear Readers, As mentioned last week, I shall add a few more things which I hope will be helpful to parents whose children exhibit consis- tent symptoms of hyperactivity andor distractability. The extremely hyperactive child is easy to single constantly busy (though it can abate during TV watching).. On .the other hand, mild hyperactivity, distractability or any combination of the two can be easy to overlook of misinterpret. With 35 or more kids in classes these days, it is even easy for a teacher to sometimes miss. The child is not necessarily' physically busy. The attention span is generally very short; even during explanations thb child might ask about or be doing unrelated things. Work is rarely completed, on time and what is turned in is sometimes poor quality. The child is usually behind andor in for recess fin out--al-m- Miss Rizette is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Rizette. She is a member of the Spanish Club and likes math classes. Many of these symptoms will be exhibited very consistently. Do nof automatically assume that this is your childs problem; most children, even A students, will exhibit some of these behaviors once in a while! If you do suspect that your child may have this problem, validate the symptoms at home and school. Visit with the childs teacher and resource teacher (even if the child is not in a resource class) about the symptoms. Get their opinions. Then, I hope you have one of the few doctors who are aware of the educational Relate all pertinent information to your doctor. Hopefully all opinions will match and if medicine is the right choice, you should be able to tell by the improved responses in the child within four to six weeks. To most, the .choice would seem to be medication vs. the childs health. While that is very important, another major question cannot be overlooked: How will my child feel about himherself by ninth or tenth grade when they have received very poor grades and attitude marks for many years? The truly distractable child faces exactly this situation. Medication may not be a terrific choice, but the alternative may not be any better, depending on the severity of the childs situation. Medications have improved much over years ago. It is possible to tell within four to six weeks (sometimes sooner) if medication will help your child. Generally a child will be put on a low dosage which can be slightly increased if a tolerance develops. During the summer children are often taken off the medication entirely then they begin the next school year at the' -low dosage again.
