Show w Sunday Ogden April 27 1986 3F Outdoors Ticks waiting to hitch a ride Wildlife By STEPHEN L Standard correspondent SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Cutbacks in the US Forest Service wildlife budget will dctract from good management of wild animal environments but woq’t destroy them the director of wildlife and fisheries for the ser- Examiner CLARK Ph ‘can live’ If you have taken a walk lately along the foothills you should have noticed that wild flowers are not the only living things that come out in the spring and that last year’s burrs are not the only objects that cling to your pants and socks The creatures are stirring on the mountainside One of these is a small flat root critter known as the Rocky Mountain wood tick They now hang from the leaves of sage brush and blades of grass just waiting to hitch a ride on some aniunsuspecting mal that happens to pass by It gives me the shivers just to think about it I'd rather see a rattlesnake than find a wood tick crawling on my neck Rattlesnakes and I came to an agreement long ago: If I don't bother them they don't bother me Such is not the case with ticks They just can't wait to sink their teeth into my flesh and drink my blood That just won't do I don’t mind sharing my sandwich with some wild critter but I’m not about to share my blood Aristotle in the fourth century BC refered to ticks as “disgusting parasitic animals” Today we call the one that is familiar to most of us Dermacentor i Wood ticks are not insects Because the adults possess eight legs have unsegmented bodies and lack a distinct head they are grouped with the spiders and mites into the class Arachnida Ticks are distributed widely throughout western North America their numbers being greatest in areas of dense shrubby vegetation They are especially fond of sagebrush A review of their life cycle logiin the spring or early summer when a female adult tick drops off a host animal and lays its 6000 plus eggs on the soil The eggs require a incubation period From the eggs emerge larvae which soon attach themselves to small mammals such as mice and squirrels After feeding for three to five days the larvae drop off the host animal to molt Molting produces nymphs that can’t wait to attach themselves to another small mammal There they feed molt again and produce the adult form of the tick This process is usually complete by July or early cally begins View August after which the adult ticks disappear until the following spring In the spring the adults find large mammal hosts such as sheep deer bear or man They feed and reproduce on these before the female drops to the ground to lay her eggs Throughout their entire life cycle ticks are extremely resistant to dehydration and starvation It has been reported that adults collected from spring vegetation have survived 413 days without food z I learned from Dr David a medical entomologist at Weber State College that ticks for up usually crawl on their host to four hours before settling down for a meal on a tasty piece of skin They insert scalpel like mouth parts that cut the tissue and form a pool of blood from which they suck the body’s fluids One word of caution: you won't feel their bite Ticks are of concern to man for at least two reasons: First they are capable of transmitting Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and other diseases However according to Dr Havertz the incidence of spotted fever along the Wasatch front is very low less than’ one reported case for each one hundred thousand population Second ticks are responsible for enormous losses in cattle and sheep causing much more loss I might add than all of the real predator damage put together A 1965 US Department of Agricul- ture report estimates annual cattle losses at $60 million and sheep losses at $47 million Please don’t let this talk about “vampire ticks” spoil your canyon outing Take a few precautions: check yourself regularly spray your legs socks and pants with repellent if you choose or tuck your pants into your boots Most important if one gets on you get it off before it gets into you Don’t try to pull it out and don’t try to bum it off Cover the tick with petroleum jelly or heavy grease You must wait for about 20 minutes for the tick to back out of the wound If you break the tick’s head off you could be subjected to infection or a condition known as tick paralysis gists Bob Nelson said the agency can use the help of volunteers to help restore habitat but cannot do without biologists to organize wildlife programs The division which manages half of the big game and coldwater fish habitat in the nation depends on biologists for technical information used by land managers “We get great help with volunteers but when you have one biologist assigned to an entire national forest how much time does he have to spend a weekend " with volunteers?” he said Jim Nelson said his Nevada e emforest has lost 17 Associated Waiting for love peregrine falcon presumably one
