Show Ogden ports Ogden It was another banner year for prep basketball in Northern Utah this season with Davis High and State champion Ben Lomond pacing the list of players who have been selected to the annual Ogden High School Boys Basketball Team announced today JBen Lomond and Davis each placed a pair of their players on the first team with Weber Bonneville Roy Clearfield Layton and Ogden each landing one of their performers on the coveted squad Leading the list are Ben Lomond's terrific twosome of Kurt Miller and Larry Cain along with Davis High's dynamic duo of Mike Taylor and Jon Recs They are joined by Jon Fuller of Weber High Bonneville's Larry Lander Roy's Mark Newey Darrel Hicks of Clearfield Rex Brimhall of Layton and Ogden High's Sean Mooney Each year the sports department selects an squad following consultation with each of the 12 high school boys head basketball coaches in the newspaper's circulation area which extends north as far as Bear River as far south as Davis High and includes Morgan High Each year the final selection first process of picking a team from the long list of nominations is a difficult one This year's task was no different especially as so many area schools and players enjoyed such successful seasons during the campaign But this year's squad boasts a superb blend of size strength shooting excellence and rebounding ability which would make it a force for any other such squad in the state to reckon with - And not only does this year's team possess superior firepower but it also has players who have learned what it takes to win and win some more and win Mark Newey Roy High Newey a senior guard averaged 247 points per game including out- a burst against season T He Sky View in pre- play also added six rebounds and 55 assists per game for a Roy High team which without much size or a strong supporting cast struggled through an uncusseason tomary losing Although most of his shots came from long range Newey still hit 46 percent of his field goal attempts and connected at a 78 percent clip from the foul line "He had a lot of pressure on him this year and drew a lot of attention" Roy High head coach Ted Smith said of Newey "But he still managed to lead us in scoring and assists this season "He gave us good leadership throughout the year too And although we didn't win as many games as we would have liked Mark helped keep us close in virtually every game we played" Kurt Miller Ben Lomond He's just a junior but Miller has been stamped with greatness The only repeat performer first from last year's on team and the only this year's squad Miller has alcareer ready become the scoring and rebounding leader at BL This season his third as a starter for the Scots the talented averaged 299 points per game — a statistic made even more impressive by the fact that he shot a staggering 64 percent from the field Miller's tremendous leaping ability and body control helped him pull down 138 rebounds per game plus block a couple of half of the season his first as a starter after being slowed by a virus early in the year Cain who has signed a nato play for tional the University of Utah made a major contribution in Ben Lomond's winning streak and State championship bid scoring 35 points in their triumph over Timpview Cain wound up averaging 128 points eight rebounds and five blocked shots per game while connecting on 60 percent of his field goal attempts "Larry had a virus for three or four weeks early in the season but once he kicked that he really became a factor for us in region play and in the state tournament" said Scots' coach Evan Excell "He was a real intimidating factor on defense and in some games he had as many as 10 or 12 blocked shots "He certainly made a great contribution to our success this season and I think he showed people in that championship game that he's a major college prospect and that the U wasn't nuts for signing him He's a great shooter for a big man and is very intelligent too" Excell said of Cain whose 39 GPA earned him a spot on the academic team as well Sean Mooney Ogden A center Mooney aver13 points and 11 rebounds per game in helping Ogden to an finish in the State so hard He's the player I've seen at Ogden High" said Tigers' coach "He's had Dave Nordquist some 17- - and games in region play "His ability to dominate kept us in some games He's also very quick for a big man he moves down the floor quickly" aged Larry Lander Bonneville A 3 senior forward Lander averaged 17 points three assists two steals and four rebounds per contest in leading Bonneville to its second straight Region I championship and second consecutive unbeaten region record Bonneville wound up overall this season Lander who played a key role in the Lakers" Mark Newey Roy State championship last year was a 47 percent shooter and a 78 percent shooter this season "Larry's the captain of the team and our most consistent scorer" said Bonneville coach Gary Alverson "He's a real hard worker "He was at his best in the big games For example he had an excellent state tournament this year as well as last year He's one of the main reasons for a lot of our success" Jon Fuller Weber High Fuller led Weber to a season slate and an Tournafinish in the State senior forward ment as the averaged 13 points and 71 rebounds per game Fuller who starred as a wide receiver and defensive back for the Warriors' State championship footbail team hit 47 percent of his shots from the field and also had 37 steals this season "He has so much quickness in play he really beats people to the baseline" Weber coach Gary Weight said "We've tried to create situations for him because we felt once he gets the ball on the wing and penetrates there's no stopping him "On defense with his quickness and jumping he's done a super job on our presses all year long He just did everything well aththis year He's an lete and a great kid" Mike Taylor Davis High senior forward Taylor a was a starter and one of the Darts captains this season Despite his lack of height Taylor demonstrated an uncanny ability to take the ball inside against much taller opponents "He was the guy we tried to go offensively because he had the ability to score or draw a foul" said Davis coach John Robison Taylor led Davis in scoring averwith a 23 45 age including a points against Highland He shot 59 percent from the floor and was an 83 percent shooter Taylor also pulled down eight rebounds per game averaged two assists per game and led the team in steals with 42 "His competitiveness and attitude are what impressed me people attribute our success (19-record seventh-plac- e finish in State Tournament) to Rees His quickness allowed him to play inside against taller players and we tried to get him anytime we could" Robison said Rees who was the Darts' other team averaged 16 points 10 rebounds and two assists per game while shooting 53 percent from the field and 77 percent from the foul line "We really stressed to our team that we wanted to take the ball inside I told Rees early in the season the ball was coming inside and he rose to the occasion Just like (Mike) Taylor Rees really decided to get it done this year" Robison said Ben Lomond Ed Green senior r starter averforward and aged 10 ppg 13 rpg and six assists per game in becoming Ben Lomond's career leader in assists senior guard Gerald Broad 96 ppg shot 52 percent from field 79 percent from foul line and set school record for assists with 223 averaging over nine per game Shawn Palau senior guard 82 ppg and over six assists per game shot 50 hard working and not afraid of throwing himself on the floor or going into the stands after a loose ball "Brimhall would just as soon take a (offensive) charge as much as anything He just did whatever
