Show BY Gary Warren The Payson Lions moved a step closer to the Class A. Championship with a 20-- 0 victory over the Richfield Wildcats in the Semi-fina- ls Saturday. The game was much closer most of the contest than many people thought it would be. Neither team was able to mount a scoring drive the first half as both teams had their offensive problems early. The Lions did move into Richfield territory in the first half on the running of Mark Etherington, Chad Smith and Tim Durrant but Richfield was able to hold and started to move up field into Lions territory. The Wildcats felt they would try to pass on Payson and the passing seemed to look like it might pay off but the Lions halted the Richfield drive and as was typical of the first half the ball continued to go back and forth and as the first half ended the score was still Payson 0 and Richfield 0. As the second half opened Scott Wilson kicked off for the Lions and Richfield returned to the 29 of the Wildcats. After no gain on first down a pass fromChesley Erickson to Rex Fransen put Richfield just inches short of a first down but the Lions held and Richfield punted. The Lions got their first break here as the kick went off the punters side of his foot and the Lions had the ball on their 44. On first down Mark Etherington broke through the line and went clear to the Wildcat 27 before being stopped. The Lions again ran Etherington on the next play and the rugged halfback moved to the 15 and a piling on penalty against Richfield put the ball on the 7 of Richfield. Now with first and goal Gary Weight ran to the 3 and then Etherington moved to the 1 creating a third and 1 yard to go for touchdown. On the next play Gary Cannon opened a hole and Etherington scored with 8:25 left in the third quarter. The extra point attempt by Craig Haskell was good and the Lions led 0. The Lions now kicked off again and the kick went to Larry Smith who returned to the Wildcat 26. The Wildcats again had their problems and on third down Erickson threw a pass that was picked off by Tom Horn of the Lions on the Richfield 37. Mark Etherington moved to the 33 and on second down he carried to the 25 for a first down. Richfield now received a break as the Lions again ran Etherington halfback but this time the hard-nosfumbled and Richfield recovered on the Richfield 9. Richard Chamberlain recovered the fumble for the Wildcats. The Wildcats started to move as Larry Smith picked up 4 yards to the 13 on first down. Ed Street picked up 1 on second down and then Richfield picked up a first down on their 28 on a pass by Erikson. Richfield again had their drive halted as Gary Weight picked off a pass by Erikson and ran back to the Wildcat 22. Dick Armstrong now did the running for the Lions and in two plays Armstrong put the ball into the end zone for the second Payson score. Haskells kick was no good and with 2:04 left in the third quarter Payson led 13-- 0. The Lions who couldnt seem to move the ball in the first half must have received quite a talk from Coach Durrant at halftime because Payson really looked strong the second half. The last Payson score came early in the fourth quarter. Crouch threw 40 yard pass to Bob Warren who got clear down to the Richfield 10. Armstrong then got 1 yard and then Mark Etherington broke through a big hole for the touchdown with about 11 minutes left in the game. The extra point by HaskeU was good and Payson held on to win by that score of 20-- 0. The win gives Payson the right to meet of last Judge Memorial in a years Class A championship 29--game.
