Show 10 THE PAYSON CHRONICLE Thursday, June 18, 1970 AGROUND THE ft U&TOWNoEL B. Davit Evant Dear Reader: Junes a bustin Out All Over, and its so dern cold on this 61070 that Ive got my furnace going me ole bathtub loaded with hot water and me. Its 6:00 a.m. and here we go. Just a line in appreciation of my old friend Elisha Warner. Hes the feller who wrote an editorial recently which helped me when help was needed. Thank you, Mr. Warner. I have your editorial pinned on the wall above my typewriter and I promise to give it a gander each time I settle down to write. I liked your quotation from you know I had so many people ask me to who. interpret its meaning. I hope I gave it justice. Now this brings me to my subject for It may not be today: Instant Learning. it The average the is: is but this way right modern doesnt want to ponder over the meaning of anything; theyve been exposed too long to Readers Digest, T.V., Charley Brow, funny books, etc. We live at a time when too many follow the rule: If at first I dont succeed, to hell with it. We are in the midst of a youth revolution; they want reform in colleges, in government, in church and they want the fact today so they can use them tomorrow and it seems that if they cant get what they r JX want, this grand old land of ours is going to be torn asunder. I suppose the techniclogical age has accomplished this: Put a package in the oven, presto, dinner; add hot water topre-pare- d potatoes, potatoes; add water to a prepared drink mix, beverage; drive up to your garage, door opens automatically. Its getting so nobody has to do nuthin. We just move around and a beam of some kind or other does the work instantly. It seems to me weve past the point of Diminish and Return, I mean by that, modern conveniences are making a new breed of people and Im not so sure they are as powerful as the depression type. No one wants to wait for anything any more. Patience, which is among my 20 favorite words, is becoming as old fashioned as the model A. In Max Raffertys column in a recent Sunday Tribuen, he stated that rules at Vasser permit young ladies to have men basis. in their rooms on a Now doesnt this seem to you that these outstand you ladies in our American Society are impatient to have experience in all things, including sex? The same author also stated that the California State Supreme Court chided the State Board o Education for daring to deny a teaching credential to a confessed and practicing homosexual. An old fashioned board, huh? Those members should come to time, join the mod squad, huh? Give us the Show us what its like! Tell us how it is! These are facts! some of the modern war cries. We should show em how it is, with a lot more films on a lung cancer operation, a tour through a sanitorium loaded with an experience in the life of an unwed mother, etc. Hollywood can make a couple of hundred copies of a filthy movie to be shown in a couple of hundred U.S. citiev all at the same time. Why cant our school systems invest in the future by showing our kids how it is, not just once in a high school career, but time after time after time. Our youth need instant education. She lives over fifty miles from here and since I dont get down to see folks in that area Im always glad to see Aunt Bessie come because she really keeps up on whats going on and remembers what has happened in the past. When I asked how things had gone for her and her husband during the winter Aunt Bessie sat and thought a few momYou know, ents and then she smiled. until now Id never really realized it, but we had a good winter, yes a real good winter. There are two things that usually our winter has gone. If the rook cards are right handy, say on the dining room table, and the aspirin bottle is almost empty you know weve had a bad winter. On the other hand if no one knows where the rook cards are and the aspirin bottle is full then weve had a good winter. Last winter when the crops were bad and the weather didnt cooperate we wore out two sets of rook cards and had to replace the aspirin bottles twice. But this year we havent even looked at rook cards or aspirins so tell the story of how it was a good year. As I thought about Aunt Bessie after she left I remembered a winter when I visited with her and Uncle Wayne. That year had been one filled with worry and trouble. When they finished eating supper they would get out the rook cards and play for hours. Sometimes I played with them and sometimes if I had other things I wanted to do they played double rook It seemed to get their by themselves. minds away from their troubles and get them tired enough so that they could sleep and face the next day. Aunt Bessie mentioned the card playing once at that time and said how happy she was that Uncle Wayne wasnt like some men she knew who turned to drink or gambling or women when the crops or other things werent doing so good. Like she said, playing rook accomplished the purpose and didnt make any more worries than they already had, so she was especially thankful to the person who invented rook. I think Aunt Bessie had some good ideas. Havent you seen times when people had worries or troubles and instead of trying Its our America . Among the responsibilities that we as Americans should assume is the right to preserve the freedom that our forefathers fought for so gaUantly. Now in this year, 1970, our precious flag is being desecrated; our courageous law enforcement officers are underpaid, understaffed, are being persecuted and the very laws that have been set up to protect the innocent often are being used to the advantage of the guilty to escape punishment. Do we as Americans understand the of freedom? George Walter Fishe speaks of freedom as meaning: Many a boy has discovered that real freedom is never gained by breaking legitimate laws. Obedience to Law is Liberty is the appropriate inscription over the massive entrance of the great courthouse in Cleveland and it is wonderfully true. There is no real liberty in any other course. Just doing what you please and following that impulse, is not true freedom. Obeying a sudden impulse to follow the primrose path usually starts or strengthens some bad habit which forges shackles on our characters and destroys by just so much our freedom. A lawless person is never free. He is a 21 OIL off t aiwS Q.
