Now in the play Hamlet nearly every leading character in the play is murdered on purpose, by mistake or by his own hand; Brother Bill left Hamlets friend alive because he had one good speech left for someone to make over the dead Hamlet and Horatio may as well be that boy: Good night Sweet Prince, let flights of angels guide you to your rest, etc. Both Romeo and Juliet committed suicide; Otello, a black man married to a white woman was so jealous of her that he strangled her in the final scenes of h, the play; enough blood was shed in including babies blood, to sicken the strongest of us; in Julius Ceasar, a good lesson in killing ones self is taught: You get a friend to hold a sword, butcher knife will do, then you run on it. I could go on for quite a while giving ideas about Shakespearian violence that our school kids get a taste of. Can you imagine a mother saying: Son dont sit there watching that violent John Wayne movie, go read Mac Beth. If that mother knew her Shakespeare, she would know that John Wayne would never dare ido some of the things that MacBeth and his wife seemed to enjoy doing. I suppose Im missing the main purpose of Shakespearean literature because so much of it is smothered in blood; kids may be laboring under the same problem. My message today isnt to be appreciated in certain circles, but I would certainly like to teach or be taught from a book wherein no one dies violently, no one kills sadistically and the main theme being Love thy Neighbor. I suppose were living in a world of violence and it will continue to be such but Im naive enough to believe that our schools could be one sanctuary where beautiful reading can be found without having all the miseries of the world involved. Im sure have plenty of static from some of my colleagues if they take time out from their Shakespear to read this column, but freedom of the press will Ill investment of $500 or more this month assures this high return until Dec. 1972.
