View from Q press box on Celia It has been said never knock a man when he is down and the same must apply to a team. Surely the Payson Varsity basketball team are capable of sustaining four quarters of play without throwing the ball of grammar school away like a bunch FURNITURE and CARPETING &mwi yfcuM kids. Friday against North Sevier was a case in point. Payson led at the first 6, at the half like quarter, real Lions they increased the lead as the second half started to ten points at 6, and then started their downfall. With the lead the Lions let North Sevier 6 score eight straight points and pull up where Wall hit for two baskets 4 and stretched the lead out to But apparently success spoiled the Lions and they started throwing the ball around like they didnt give a darn and before long 3. lost the lead at The Third quarter ended with North With 27 seconds to 3. Sevier leading go in the final quarter Payson and North 1. The Sevier were all tied up at Lions called a time out, their sixth and were assessed a technical foul. As for North Sevier dropped the , ee throw in the hoop it was all over for the e. Lions and the end of Now all they have to look forward to will be eight region four games and unless there is more polish shown it could be a long season. Loyal fans are bleeding because they just arent used to seeing the caliber of play they have been watching lately. Someone should declare the Lion gym a disaster area because it certainly has all the necessary elements present. There are still too many football players on the court and a lot of basketball players warming the bench. Apparently a prerequisite for making the varsity basketball 'team is a successful football season. Someone should take the administration aside and explain that there are two seasons. Football, with those who have the ability and physical attributes to excell in the game and then basketball and once again for those who can excell and the two grounds are rarely the same. True some men are able to be starters True some men are able to be stars in both sports but they are legendary and not in great abundance on the hill. Most fans appreciate the seniority system where seniors get the call over juniors but sometimes it gets a little rediculous and Im certain even the seniors would admit the best five should be on the court regardless of class or year. Being a senior is great what with it being the last year in school but it cer- tainly never was intended as giving an athlete a locked in spot on any team. Ability still should be the criteria used in the selection of any team. Personal feelings of a coach, other members or anyone else should have no effect, whatever, on the team selection, unless an individual just doesnt get along with the other team members. The winning attitude that prevailed during the football season seems to have vanished and lethargy has taken hold. Unless the members of the team get on the ball and get fired up they are going to be blown off the court by the likes of 17-1- 6, Reed N. North Sevier with a small team beat the Lions with hustle, effort on the boards and just plain extra effort. Certainly it is realized anyone who lias criticize the team risks the nerve to chastisement from the community, still there has been so much conversation about the basketball program for a long time, it certainly is no secret there are problems. It is our sincere desire that the lems, whatever they are, be received and tic ton, Wasatch, Morgan, Emery, Kearns, Box Elder, Cyprus, Delta, Juab and North Sevier. As an avid fan of high school programs we are deeply grieved to hear students remark that there is a lack of a desire to win. Whatever else may happen dont forget, Payson opens the basketball season by playing Carbon High School in Price, Friday evening. Make the trip and root for the team. They are capable of winning and Carbon could be the night they really sparkle and stay alert for a full game. If they can you should see a real great game with Payson coming out on top. |
