District 4 and Post 68 officers strongly urge all members and prospective members of the Legion and Auxiliary to attend this conference. Programs and membership will be discussed by State Department heads. Members are also reminded of Post meetings which are held the second Wednesday of each month. Plan now to come out and help plan the program and activities for the coming season. Music concert Young Audiences Inc. wiU present a Live Concert of Fine Music for Children in their Schools" on Monday, September 22, at the Edgemont School, 3800 No. 500 East in Provo, Utah. Especially invited to attend are the School Principals, P.T.A, Presidents, parents and anyone who would like to attend. The purpose of Young Audience is to make music an exciting part of a childs life through programs for the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Young audience Concerts can bring the joy of music directly to children in an informal intimate atmosphere. Dont insist on stiff formal behavior. Let them listen., their likes and dislikes are exciting! Music is universal in its appeal and youngsters love people who do things extremely well..a fine musician will soon capture their interest and excite their imagination. Argyle The Payson Chronicle wishes to recognize Reed B. Argyle, Assistant Postmaster of the Payson Office in our Postal Profnertddayr- Mr. Argyle was born in Payson to Ivan M. and Venetta Betts Argyle. He was educated in her schools being a graduate of the Payson High School. He is married to the former Dorothy M. Bearnson and they are parents of the following children: Edward, 10; Karen, eight; Joy, seven; and Shaun age five. He enjoys fishing, hunting, and flying. He served his country in the United States Navy for four years. Transport officer Superintendent Joe A. Reidhead announces the appointement of Lee J. Bate as Transportation Officer for Nebo School District. Mr. Bate will assume his new duties on Monday , September 15. He will be in charge of all District motor vehicles. This includes scheduling of school buses and keeping them in service. Mr. Bate will have an office in the District Office Building and part of the time he will work .in the bus repair shop in Payson. He lives in Springville with his wife and three sons and a daughter. He is a graduate of Springville High Sehool and has attended B.Y.U., Utah State University and Utah Technical College. enjoyed this well arranged evening. On Tuesday of this week the Senior Citizens took a bus to the State Fair, and many also attended Holiday on Ice at the A Salt Palace. report on this was not available at press time, but will be published in nevt weeks Chronicle. Coming events include the weekly travelogue and bingo games, followed by refreshments Friday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. - The Magical Andersons will be presented at 8 p.m. in the Tabernacle Friday, Sept. 26th. This show of mysterious wonders is presented as a fund raising event at 50? per ticket. Everyone is urged to attend, regardless of age. Wilson School Elementary School will hold a Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7:00 p.m. A short business meeting will start the evening, with teachers, PTA officers and room mothers introduced to the group attending. Later, parents will visit class room and meet the teachers, with time to discuss their children with the teachers, who will point out the program for the year. The annual Flower Show will be ready for viewing, and parents will be invited to examine the various entries. Light refreshments will be served. Those wishing to pay dues that night will be invited to do so. Mrs. Norman Rowley, president, is in charge of arrangements and will preside at the meeting. Wilson Taylor School SENIOR CITIZENS Two events of great interest to Senior Citizens have taken place since last publication of the Payson Chronicle. .One of these was the banquet held Friday evening, followed by a dance, all held in the Citizens Tabernacle. Some 120 people Back to school nite William R. Phelps Appointment R. Phelps; Payson, has been a member of the Utah House of appointed Representatives from Utah County. He succeeds Rep, Verl D. Stone, Fork, who resigned upon his appointment to the county commission to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Floyd Harmer. Gov. Calvin L. Rampton officially announced the appointment. Mr. Phelps, a Republican, has served 10 years as Payson precinct chairman, and eight years as District Six Chairman in Payson. He has been state and county delegate for the Republican Party and has served on several committees in Payson. As a member of the Wildlife Federation, he has served as president of the Utah County Federation for several terms. He is past secretary of the Payson Federation. Mr. Phelps has been adjutant to the American Legion Post 48 in Payson, and adjutant to the American Legion District Four. He has served on the Payson City Chamber of Commerce and for the past 30 years had been employed with the Union Pacific Railroad. For 26 years he has worked as a station agent in the Spanish William Fork-Pays- on Carma Lamb conducted , PTA President the first PTA Meeting and annual Back to School night at the Taylor School on September 11, 1969. Den 1 of the Third Ward Cub Scouts conducted a special flag ceremony commemorating the flag planting at Iwo Jima. The opening prayer was offered by Joe Lynn Spencer. President Lamb introduced her fellow officers and room mothers. She thenpresented the past presidents pm to Betty Christensen. Two musical numbers were presented by the 4th and 5th grades under the direction of their teachers Ned Hansen and Joe Lynn Spencer with Arlene Provstgaard accompanying them. Anitra Martin gave a tribute to the parents and Princiapl Merrill Ashby reviewed the policies of the school along with plans for a student government. Parents attending then enjoyed a flower show which the children had prepared earlier in the day. Carol Sue Mortensen conducted the show aided by Carma Lamb and Diane Hansen. Geneva Montague judged the entries. Each child was awarded a Sweepstakes," First, or second place ribbons. Clinton Zeeman, who is unable to attend school for health reasons, is enrolled in the fourth grade. He entered the show and was awarded a Sweepstakes ribbon along with the children pictured. Following the meeting, refreshments were served by the presidency, and memberships were sold by Betty Hurst. Its autumn and Homecoming has come again to the valley. Payson High School, under the general chairmanship of George Puckett, will have a week filled with exciting events. Pam Ellsworth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ellsworth, was crowned at an Queen of the 1969 Homecoming assembly held Monday morning with Arch Williams acting as Master of Ceremonies. Sherry Bryan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Bryan, and Susan Christensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Christen sen, will act as Miss Ellsworths attendants. The queen was crowned by Lana Daley who was last years Homecoming The royalty was presented with Queen. corsages. There were 12 girl finalists competing for the royalty; the other nine girls included Miriam Christensen, Kathleen Clements, Betty Gay, Linda Johnson, Shauna Johnson, Angie Kenison, Cindy Madsen, Wendy Shuler and Elaine Thompson. There were 42 girls in competition for the queen contest. J. D. Mitchell and Linda Woodward were of the Queens Contest. During the week, a "car decorating contest" will be held by the students. The contest will be under the direction of Student Body President Alvin Riley and Ben Leatham, faculty advisor. A poster contest to promote spirit will also be conducted with Mr. Leatham acting as chairman. Friday will be the Most Happy Homecoming Dayl At 9 a.m. the assembly featuring talent including alumni classes of 1955; 1964 through 1969 and the Class of 1970. Mirian Sue Johnson Perfect Primary & S. S. attendance Mirian Sue Johnson, 11, has a perfect attendance record at both Primary and Sunday School for the past four years. For this outstanding achievement she Ross Dowdle has beenhonored on Special Day. Since this is her fourth year of attending all meetings Mr. Dowdle increased her cash award and presented her with a new five dollar bill. Miriam Sue is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Johnson, 59 East 400 North, Payson. For several years Mr. Dowdle has encouraged the children of his ward to attend their Primary meetings by offering a new half dollar to those who have perfect attendance records. For those who miss only one meeting he offers a new dime. All others attending Primary on his Special Day are presented with a penny, teachers as well as boys and girls. Mr. Dowdle does not recall how long he has been giving these awards, but has in his possession a small gift presented to him in 1961 for ten years service to the Primary." The assembly committee includes students Layne Murdock, Kathleen Dixon and Kirk Horton with Miss Clara Johnson 1 as faculty advisor. 11 At a.m, Friday there will be a rally held downtown with the cheer leaders in charge. The Homecoming game will be played at 3 p.m. with Payson High School and Orem High opposing each other. There e wiU be a show sponsored by the Pep Team and the band. Prices for football games in the Region this year will be $1.25 for adults and 50? . for students. The evenings events will highlight the; annual Homecoming dance at 8:30 p.m. with the alumni and their friends as guests-Ther- e will be a "live" orchestra and "party dress to add to the evenings festivities. S. typing available On the evening of September 8, at the regular Adult High School registration, a class was tentatively organized in Typewriting and Businesss Machines. There is still room for additional adult students to be enrolled. The class will run for 72 clock hours and will carry one unit of high school credit. No classes have yet been held. Mr. Phelps is active in the Presbyterian Church, of which he has been a member for 22 years. He and his wife, the former Barbara Plummer, reside in Payson, and are the parents of a son, 16, and a daugh- ter, 23. The appointment became necessary because of the death of Floyd Harmer, who was serving his third year of a four-ye- ar term on the Utah County Commission. Mr. Harmer was replaced by Verl D. Stone, who is the predecessor to Mr. Phelps. He is also a member of the Golden Spike Chapter of Morse Telegraph Club of America. The lovely Utah County Dairy Princen and her attendants: Phyllis Nelson, Spanish Fork; Phyllis Roach, Palmyra; Diane Francom, West Mountain and Margie Schroeder of Orem. They have visited many schools and meetings. Utah County Dairy Princess visits school The Utah County Dairy Princess, Susan Nelson of Spanish Fork, and her attendants, Phyllis Roach of Palmyra; Diane Francom of West Mountain; and Margie Schroeder of Orem, visited the Park View School recently in Payson, reception was held and the royalty enumerated the good qualities of the dairy products for the elementary children.
