Orchard hills for Payson Mainstreet, Ill bet there are a lot of oldtimers who like to reminisce about how the old Payson Mainstreet used to be. I am referring to a look down the way from the old Payson High School. Remember when there were bear cages on the southwest corner of the Memorial Park? Mr. Emil Houser used to be the gardener at that time, and all of the kids used to flock around him, asking him questions by the millions pertaining to the bears and their care. Boy! I can still remember the smell that they used to have, especially on a very hot day! The kids didnt seem to mind, though, as they gathered there everyday of the world, fascinafed by these huge animals. At that time, the Snow White Cleaners used to belong to a man by the name of Cobb Barner. He and his wife, Inez, used to be the best cleaners in the West, in my Those were the days when estimation. Safeway was managed by Bruce Walton. It was located where the IGA is now. The Elite Cafe was owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Lee Vest, and they really served good meals there. I believe it was also the Burlington Bus stop. Along that street, the Recreation Billiards was in operation and was owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Brooks Robertson, who have both since then, passed on. Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Dunn used to have the place that is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Byron Dastrup. Before that, it was a confectionery, owned, I believe, by a Mrs. Gramms. Somewhere along Main-strea bakery and confectionery was run . by a Wirthlin family. These things are a little vague to me, as I was real small, but I can still remember my folks taking me down there and I was completely enchanted by the little ice cream tables and chairs and I will always recaU the simply delightful smell that it had. Isnt it funny how smells linger in your memory for a million years, it seems! It is like a world of enchantment to reminisce about things of your childhood, isnt it? Another business I still remember is the . old B.F. Ott Drug Store. It was a very nice place to stop on a real hot day in the summertime. They always had the best strawberry ice cream in the whole wide world. Pecks used to have a bakery across the street, and later, a record and music shop was operated by Mr. and Mrs. Dal Adams. On further down the street was the old A and W Root Beer Stand. It was owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Bus Ludlow for years, after which it was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Hart Brown. This place was truly the gathering place for good old : friends during the Payson Onion Days, as they were called at that time. Ah, those were the days, weren't they? Across the street, was a cafe owned by Mr. and Mrs. Byron Stahlie. The food they cooked was really a gourmets delight. The cafe that is now Bobs Cafe used to belong to Ruth and Don Cloward. It was another good place to eat and was another gathering place for all, after the other places were closed, for it stayed hours each and everyday. open twenty-foThe Pool Hall that is now Tom Browns was the property of Boots Barnett and his wife and son, Gordon. They were two of the happiest guys that I have every known. IU never forget them, and there are a good many people who feel the same way as I do. Then, there was the Naylor grocery store. Mr. Henry Naylor and his wife met in the hospital after Mr. Naylor had lost his eye sight. I believe it was the war et, As I visited in the home of a young family recently I was amused at some of the things which happened, but as I thought of them later they reminded me of instances when such circumstances werent amusing. The couples young son who is going on eight had gotten a bit upset with another member of the family and decided that something drastic should be done. He felt that the thing to do was to run away, immediately if not sooner. As he told his mother of his decision she was as patient and helpful as possible. As he put a few belongings in a small gym bag she posed the question, Will you go now or will you wait until the chicken supper is over with? After a short deliberation the boy decided that he had better wait until after supper so that he wouldnt have so much to carry in his pack. After supper had beep cleared away his mother asked if he would go then are wait until his favorite television program that took his sight from him. It always made me wonder how it would seem to not know what your wife or husband looked like. It always amazed me, too, that Mr. Naylor always knew just what every coin was, whether it be a nickle, dime, penny or whatever. This was truly a remarkable man. The Huishs owned the show house at that time, and in the very early days, it was owned, I believe, by the Dones. Mrs. Sarah Tanner used to tell me about playing the piano at a very early age, for the silent pictures. We have certainly come a long, long way in just a few short years. was over. He thoughtfully decided that he just HAD to see this particular program, -and as an afterthought-- -, the next one. When the family members his comparative age were preparing to go to bed one of them reminded him that he better take an extra blanket with his sleeping bag because there were lots of rocks around on the ground. Another member told him she thought that he should count up how much money he had available, she remembered that most motels charge quite a few dollars. When he totaled his savings of $2.62 she told him shed take two blankets because she was sure hed never find a place to stay for that much. His mother and father helped him do some planning on the food line for at least the next day so that he could save his money for later. When his father vaguely made the suggestion that he could wait until breakfast was over the next day and try to be prepared to find a good place to put his bedroll the next night before it got dark, the boy seemed interested, and when his mother also added that you had to be sure when staying out of doors that you didnt make camp around a place that snakes or skunks lived in he was convinced. Hed better wait until tomorrow and start out fresh. Needless to say with the activities of the next day he forgot all about the matter. ARCH THEATRE THE PAYSON CHRONICLE 3 Thursday, August 14, 1969 And so far as Ive heard hasnt mentioned it since. As I look back on such things I know however that these experiences are very serious business in the lives of youngsters. I recall one such incident when one of our young daughters planned to run. away. She went about the business in much earnest- ness and I offered suggestions even though I was feeling a large amount of apprehen- sion inside. Her father also joined in the game hoping to discourage her enough that she would announce that if everyone wanted to get rid other she just wouldnt go. But even though we thought we were using the right psychology on her she did get around to leaving. It was a pathetic sight to see her start down the road with her Mom watching from the window and wondering just what to do. But the situa- tion was saved by her little brother who decided that if she was going he was going to, and off he went toddling along behind her. I was getting frantic until I saw them walk a short distance with their arms around each other and then slowly turn around and return to the house. They had talked it over and decided that little brother was too young and theyd have to wait a few years. The whole episode left meinaquandery, should I have insisted on going with '. . --- . ; -- ! 1 " her myself??
