Show A "ROUND THEtf?l liffcaTOWNbO by B Dvis Evans Dear Reader: If I upset anyone out there today by what Im about to say, I hope you will consider it unintentional andlhopeunconsequential, but you know, used cars frighten the socks off me and Im gonna tell you why.. It was during World War II when cars for public use were not being made and a good used car was difficult to find. I was badly in need of wheels and a dealer friend of mine from the big town to the north learned of this so he called me on the phone. I had dealt with him before so this is how his sales talk went: Bud, Ive got a car here thats a real beaut, new paint, good tires, low milage, clean as a hounds tooth. In fact Ive been using it for my family car and weve all loved it. My wife cried when I told her I planned on selling it. Im not kidding you Bud, she cried. Now let me tell you the history of this car. It has been driven by its original owner, an old maid who never had any kids to help harm it. Im not lying when I say this car has never been out of the state of Utah. How much do you want for this wonder car, I managed to slip in a sentence. Being that its you, my old friend, Ill let you have it for $225 and whats more Ill deliver it toyourhomeby 10:00oclock in the morning." Now thats just about the way his sales pitch went. I may have exaggerated a little on the old maids kids, but I actually did hear that statement from another feller, but thats another story. Well I figured if the car was only half as good as he claimed it was, 225 bucks wasnt so bad, so likeaniny, whatever that is, I gave consent. The morning broke bright and clean and I waited, anxiously to see my wonder car. Ten oclock came and went. 'High noon came to pass then the day wore into evening and finally at 10:00 p.m. there stood my trusted dealer friend on my doorstep and standing out in the drive stood the shiniest car Id ever seen. As I drove the car around a block or two, this feller was telling me that he was late and he because of a dying mother-in-la- w found it hard to leave the lovely old ladys bedside. The car didnt sound so bad and it drove fairly well, so the deal was made. He even had the title notarized before I signed it. I gave him those 225 hard earned sheckels and man I never saw a feller get out of another fellers house so fast in all my life. Another car came out of the night, (1 hadnt been aware that he had a buddy along,) and wisked my good friend away in a cloud of dust. The following day was Sunday; a beautiful day for a drive. I sauntered out to behold by new used car. The first thing I noticed even from a distance was that I had a flat tire. I staggered to the car and on examining the tires, I found that I had a set of regrooves. A regroove is a tire that has been worn bald then a machine puts a groove in that resembles a tread. By flashlight they had looked good but in dayAnd you know light, they were paper-thiwhat else? That car didnt have a spare or a jack. Well, I patched the tire; the tube had been patched at least 25 times. I started the thing up and that beast laid a smoke screen that hid my complete house and lot for a few moments. The fact was slowly dawning on me that Id been taken. I figured Id paid about $215 too much for that car. The only thing it had of value was the paint job. After turning off the ignition, I checked the oil. It was blacker than coal and about ' as heavy. I drained the crank case and put in clean oil. Man, had I made a mistake. When I started up that motor, I heard the craziest noise Id ever heard; it sounded just like the pistons were changing sockets with each other. I being a very smart fellow realized immediately that transmission oil had been used in the crank n. case. My conscience wouldnt permit me to unload the brute on anyone in town so I took it to the big town and made an effort to sell it, but it seemed that most buyers were smarter than I had been and I had to bargain in broad daylight. I finally unloaded the pile of junk for $80. The reason Im so wealthy now is because Ive bought to many used cars high and sold them low. Of course you all understand dealers such as Ive mentioned! only come from the big town. We dont grow them this far south. I went back to that dealer and I said: You lied to me. You dont have a dying mother-in-la1 called your wife; her mother has been dead for years. Well, thats only one experience. Ive got a lot of them, flat crank shafts, milo- - $ iaazzzaasazaaaazzaaaazz The View From Here By THE PAYSON CHRONICLE Thursday, May 8, 1969 Ruth Roth iaziaazzazazzwrianaaaaai There are some sure signs of Spring in our area that you perhaps have noticed. dandelions are bloomFor one thing--th- e Have ever thought that anybody you ing. can grow dandelions". Even I can grow them, so you know that it doesnt take any special gardening skills. Some people take such pains to plant, water, tend and care for some special flowers, only to have them wither and die while the dandelions come up and thrive thick as grass on a golf course. Children love dandelions though and I may think they are commonplace weeds. I somethimes think that dandelions were thought of so that children would have flowers to admire and give to their mothers. Im sure that the finest roses were fiever presented to mothers in later years with more love than the handful of dandelions which they gave to the same mother when they were just small child- ren. Another sign of Spring is the birds and the bees. This is always evident in our 'church when the hornets appear. It is somewhat distracting to be in a class presenting a lesson and have a hornet buzzing around the ladies heads and still be able to remember what you should be saying and also to be so good that the ladies pay more attention to you than they do the hornet. At times during this season of the year it is hard tobe able to concentrate on yard work too because of the bees. Sometimes they get too playful when youre hanging out clothes. I guess you can tell that I for one am not inclined to look too kindly upon bees., Well, you might say that I got stung once and that was enough. For many people like myself the bee sting can give bad results. The last sting I got on the wrist caused my whole forearm to swell and pain so, bees are like some spunky people I know,-- -I just dont want to get involved with them. A good sign of Spring is also the fact that we get freezing weather. No sooner do farmers get their beets, grain and gardens coming along good and the fruit trees start to blossom and we can be sure that the weather will change for the worse. With the smudging to save the crops it he are again in the crazy world of daylight savings time. Right now I wish I lived in Arizona, Michigan or Hawaii where they leave Old Father Time alone. Pretty soon now youll hear yourself saying, Come on, kids. Its. 9 oclock and time for bed." And you know what youre gonna hear, dont you? Gee, Mom. Im not tired and besides, the sun is still up! Now comes the round of 10:00 suppers at our house and dirty dishes to do each morning. Who can get excited about doing dishes at 11:00 at night! When you really Well, here we mixed-u- p I DON'T CARE IF think about it though, it really doesnt make that much difference to farmers. ARE 'THE VOU ' HEREi belong to that elite minority who work according to the jobs that have to be done and not by the clock anyway. And if it requires more labor after the sun goes down, no matter what time it is, it is done. So thats that - but Ill be happy when October rolls around again. We makes us resemble the smog areas in the industrial areas. During the Spring you also can see that the love bug bites more often or a bit harder than usual because more and more people announce engagements and marriages during this time of the year. It seems that if they have been a little doubtful they soon know for sure when Spring arrives. A sure sign of Spring is evident on the television. are becoming so common-place are replacing rethat runs. Also the stations and sponsors and writers are beginning to predict what programs and what actors and actresses will be entertaining you next Fall. The greatest sign of Spring of all is Spring Fever. Guess Ive got it too, so Ill be off somewhere trying to get over it, and see you next week. Just as we usually plan for a storm for April conference, we can also usually plan for a storm when the Palmyra Livestock club have their annual stock show here in Palmyra. It was a little better Saturday than a year ago in that we didnt get soaking wet or snowed on, but that wind was pretty cool. But despite the shivering weather, the show was well supported by the H members, their parents, many of our residents and many also from the surrounding communities. Animals who have been showered with TLC (Tender, Loving Care) were exhibited and many ribbons and prizes awarded. During the past week, the final preparations have been made and all the exhibitors are ready for 4-- H Re-ru- ns re-ru- ns 4-- SANDMAN', GET OUT OF the big show this weekend. Success to all of you! This school year is rapidly coming to a close and well soon have our little darlings home for their summer vacation. I think theyll enjoy the rest though - it seems about this time of year, they find it hard to content themselves in a classroom when so many interesting things beckons them outdoors. When its cold and wintry, they like to be inside and are content with books and studies, but when the warm weather comes, its great to be outside. The teachers, too, are probably beginning to look forward to a change of pace, And just think - no more homework assignments, tests to help study for or gym suits to wash out on Sunday night! w. meters turned back over 50,000 miles etc. etc. Yes, used cars frighten the socks off me. per Gallon OFF Regular retail price during our SPRING SALE PERMALIZE GLOSS HOUSE PAINT or in JlLJl pratt Lambert &.
