Show N High Lights From Salem Mr. Dear Reader: Ive been pondering a little lately on the rapid change of things. By things, I mean our cultures, our mode of transportation, our language, our styles etc. Now lets take modern music for instance, (that is, you take it; I dont want it.) We have three teenagers in our home and just in the past few weeks, about six modern dance recordings have filtered through our front door, compiling those six with the 40 or 50 mod records already here, within these walls, one is seldom free of that constant beat of todays music. My kids sit and listen to that monotonous jungle-lik- e rhythm until Im afraid that the house B. Davis Evans aged to bring the walls of Jer-ic- o down with nothing but just people. I think Ive figured it out. They just marched around and boom boomed every so often and down they came. As I recall, they had to march around the city seven times. If hed have had a couple of our modern bands with their equipment to make noise, hed have probably brought those walls down in a couple of rounds. A couple of Saturdays ago, I called my clan together and I and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Card spent Christmas evening and day at the home of their daughter Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Einerson and family of Magna. It seems to me that more people than ever were determined to make this a Christmas which was more spiritual than commercial. I do hope that you succeeded but it seems harder each year to do it even though we all have such good intentions. I think that some of those who gave a gift of love in the form of a kindly deed instead of an expensive gift were on the right track. Like some neighbors or friends who pledged to clean off the snow from someone elses walks, or the teenager who offered to tend children free of charge. Most people still spend count- less hours and dollars on gifts to exchange with loved ones and despite all the effort involved many folks go up town after the holidays and exchange them again for something else. One man here in town I know always buys his wife an expensive gift of wearing apparreL She is inclined to be very conservative in her own spending so she always returns his purchase for a much cheaper item and pockets the extra money. Another person I know is never satisfied with any gift and always makes the doner return it for something else. One husband who likes to flatter his wife buys her a size 14 dress but always has the clerk put aside another one in the same style and color in size 18 so that his wife can exchange it. Some wives were a bit startled this year when they found a fishing pole or a bowling ball or some other sports equipment under the tree from their spouse. Some women who received such gifts in the past have remarked that it presented a new world to them be- - 4 THE PAYSON CHRONICLE Payson, Utah five years ago are still dieting. After visiting homes during the holidays where they have small children I am surprised at the variety of toys they have and especially the new ones each year. It makes me wonder what they will think of next. But after my observations there is one thing that Im sure of . The top man so far as the children are concerned in any household at this time of year is the one who owns or has temporarily borrowed some flashlight batteries. Did you ever in your life see so many things that run by battery power? When I see some of the gifts which husbands receive I am inclined to think that in some cases they get slighted at Christmas time so far as gifts are concerned. When the couple receive silverware, dishes, linens, bedspreads and such things they may get the use of these items but usually they dont get the same benefits as the women do because just to own something lovely gives a woman a special lift but I dont think its the same for the males. Were you satisfied with your Christmas tree this year? It seems that no two people married to each other ever have the same idea pbout- - Christmas trees. If or.e of them loves flocked trees the other seems to lean toward green ones. If the mother likes the old fashioned trimmings the children seem to want ornaments of just one color. Some like blue spruce some ponderosa, some will have nothing but pinion and some prefer cedar, but for some reason most family members dont all have the same preference. But one thing is that most families usually like the finished Christmas tree. Some folks are just plain perfectionists though and one person on viewing her families Christmas tree remarked that she didnt like it even though she herself had picked out the tree. She commented that she thought it looked like a plucked chicken after her younger sister had finished decorating it. One thing Ive noticed is that most dieters forget their diets during the holidays. Also it seems that the same people who were dieting a year ago or mit with a groan. Well, lots of men are finding that they can eat and drink almost as much provided they are more active. Jogging is getting more and more popular around the country. Certainly the more you exercise the less you might have to cut down on overeating and drinking. Women find that taking ballet, or going to the Y for regular exercise and indulging more in sports helps control weight. It may be amusing, in a way, that a major nutrition problem in the United States is that people eat too much. It results from the tremendous system we have in this nation for food production and distribution. Plus our affluence. It is ironic, however, when you think of people in our midst who do not get enough to eat or, for that matter, the millions of starving people overseas. For our own good, we could use more personal discipline. Maybe like the Spartans of old. So, in detail, what are some of the things we can resolve for this coming year that will make nutrition sense? First, if you're overweight, see your doctor and get on whatever regimen he prescribes and stay ( Most popular RESOLVED with it. He'll know whats best for of all bank savings you. If you are not overweight, your diet is undoubtedly at the right calorie level for you. But is it in as good balance as it might be? I dont want to be fussy. But you should be getting two or more servings each day of meat, poultry, fish, eggs or cheese. You should also be getting four or more servings of fruits and vegand four or more servetables ings of enriched or whole grain breads and cereals. Adults should be consuming two or more glasses of milk per day; teenagers and pregnant or lactating women four or more glasses; three or more glasses for children. If your family is typical, some members may be neglecting breakfast. Try to get them to have breakfast. Theyll feel better. Read labels when you buy food. Youll be more knowledgeable in your purchasing, more aware of where your money is going. Prepare foods to conserve their food value and their greatest appetite appeal. Here are some tips: Cook vegetables close to the time of serving, not earlier; and tightly covered in as little water as possible. Cook only until tender. In general, cook high protein foods such as meat, poultry, eggs and cheese at moderate or low temperatures. Use meat drippings and juices as flavorings for vegetables and other dishes. is Interest paid at maximum bank rate permitted on passbook savings: 4 AUTOMATIC "transfer This free service makes saving easier Funds are automatically transferred from your checking account to your savings account on the day or days you designate.
