One gets elated about his good fortunes and he moves about with a song in his heart for a few days, weeks or even months, but one can bet his bottom buck that hellbe brought back to earth sooner or later with a series of miserable situations. Now take the marriages of Liz Taylor for instance. She married a nobody when she was too young.. happy day..She divorces him.. sad day..She fell in love and married Mike Todd., happy.. He was killed., sad day. She stole Eddy Fisher from Debbie.. happy day. She divorced Eddie.. sad day. She stole Dick Burton from his family..happy day. Shes losing Dick.. Sad day. Now here we are, most of us riding high because its Thanksgiving and we start enumerating our blessings, happy day. But its only a few days after Thanksgiving and our property taxes come due.. sad day. We do have a couple of days longer than usual this year. I suppose we can smile a little because of this. Surprise! You werent sure what I was going to write about, were you? Well, now you know. My subject is Pay Your Taxes by the End of November or be Penalized." She says that its no wonder it passes so fast though nowadays, we cant wait for things to run their usual course, we have to always be boosting them along. Take for instance the new models of cars and appliances and most everything in the wearing apparel, foods, and most other products. The manufacturers and dealers never wait now until the new year to display and sell them, no, -- - they are in the stores and in the advertize-men- ts months before the year has ended. If you plan to go to college you must have housing, and enrollment fees paid this year not next year when you will actually attend. According to all rules and regulations next year will be too late. Aunt Maud thinks we rush the children too. It used to be that she dressed her babies in little white dresses (boys and girls alike) until they were quite a few months old and often until they were a year old. You starts treating her baby as an individual and starts making it act older than it really is from the moment she sees it. No more white dresses. No more treating like an infant. If the new babys mother or father walked when a year old the modern one must be much faster than that. Little folks used to be little folks for a while too, but now little girls wear earrings and make-u- p in grade school and many people try to encourage them to act grown up in other ways. Weve rushed all other things in life and people have even thought of trying to change the calendar so that all holidays come on weekends. Everything seems gaged to advancing faster than we want them to and yet we just cant be satisfied to let them come when they should. Take Christmas, it used to be that we let the holidays come along as they were scheduled and try to enjoy them. A few years ago someone started getting Christmas advertisements and merchandise out right after of us Most Thanksgiving. thought it was too early, but some of us liked it well enough to make it worth while so now some towns get their Christmas decorations display as soon as Halloween is over. stores now even have a Christmas sale in July. Aunt Many Maud really gets fussed up about things like that and thinks there should be some law governing it. Uncle Lon says there law of supply and demand. If people dont do their shopping until after Thanksgiving the stores will soon catch on. Of course Uncle Lon has one ace in the hole. He always gives money for Christmas. He says it may be common, and it may not be worth as much as it used to be but most folks are still glad to see it in his Christmas cards. So far he says too, theyve never had it on sale and you dont have to take it back for exchanges. (I suppose there are many who pay more than that, but we dont travel in those circles.) So we hurry home, throw away the plans, buy something for the old house that weve needed for a long time then settle in for ers, dont another year. Its the classy exteriors of homes that catch the eye of the assessors, if one could swallow his pride and remodel a log house or an adobe dwelling, yet have a little palace inside, he could save a lot of tax dough over the years. But a flashy exterior to a home, beautiful brick walls, lile-tishingles, rocked-i- n doorways etc. etc. has become a status symbol and a feller surely pays for status. I suppose an assessor sees what looks like a $30,000 home on the outside and he decides that the inside matches the outside so he adds another $10,000. Boom!" Because the inside matches the outside. You are taxed, brother! You know, it costs one more to live in his own flashy home now days than to live in a nice apartment. Im about to insert a few lines to pay tribute to the girl that I married, my wife, who has for all of our married life been more concerned about living within our means than about new cars or new homes. I dont have to buy her a new mink coat to make her happy; I brought home an old cows skull from Boulder Mountain a few years ago and its her choice possession today. An assessor wouldnt look twice at that skull. Our fireplace is built from rocks gathered from over the West, one rock at a time. She touches those rocks with loving now tenderness. I believe that gal would choose a multicolored rock over a small diamond. So you see even at Tax Time, I have something to be thankful for. Dear Reader, please dont get the idea that Im criticizing for your wanting a mansion. You live in your house; Ill live in mine and well laugh along together. Utahs Dairyman of the Year, an honor awarded annually by Future Farmers of America, will be cited at the meeting, together with dairy scholarship award winners for FFAand4-- H clubs.
