This should, therefore, be a very interesting and worth- of application. Proper fertilization and good irrigation practices are very important in producing beets with good sugar content and maximum tonnage per acre, Burton Webb, a fieldman for the sugar company at West Jordan, told growers. Not only does too much fertilizer add to the cost of producton, he said, but tests show that it actually can be detrimental for the sugar beet crop. Things aren't like they used to be. First of all is the sad but true real- ization that fewer people attend the Back to School Night than used to just a few short years ago. From Yester-Yea- r . . . Frequently the problem in decorating a home is not to follow a decor, but rather to coordinate pieces of furniture foreign to the same period. One homemaker chose to blend an old fashioned picture frame (out of which she had made a mirror)) a side table that is a decade or two old and red glass grapes. The mirror and the table (now turned parallel to the wall) are both painted gold. The ruby grapes rest atop the table. The entire arrangement takes little space and provides a focal point of interest for a wall and is ideal for a hall. Smfo while meeting for all in atten- dance. All Farm Bureau members are invited to attend. Tickets to the Convention are available through the local Presidents or the Farm Bureau offices. MddtokriUt'.,. GOICLASSIFIED Doctor in the Kitchen by W.W. Consultant, NUTRITION AND What part does diet play in the protection of your teeth against the most prevalent disease of a dental prosperous civilization decay? Are your teeth living structures or just dead ivones, Can ji good diet help poor teeth Can a bad diet harm good teeth? Who needs tooth protection most? Living Structures Teeth are living structures, even though portions of them are not. The dentine and the enamel are inert, but the pulp of the tooth contains blood vessels and nerves. The membrane which fastens the teeth to the bone, and the bony ridges of the upper and lower jaw in which the teeth are imbedded, are definitely living structures As such, they depend on good nutrition for their integ rity. Their most essential needs are calcium and phosphorus plus the vitamin D necessary for their effective absorption and utilization. Importance Of Nutrition There are certain times in life when nutrition, and therefore, diet, is most important in relation to the teeth. One of these times is when the teeth are first developing It is not generally realized that although teeth do not usually appear until about the sixth month of an infants life, they were formed as embryonic structures before birth This includes not only the baby teeth, but the adult Bauer, M.D. Dairy Council National DENTAL HEALTH teeth as well The newborn child's mouth contains the beginnings teeth Since the unborn child depends on its mother for nourishment, of 52 her supply of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D and of course all the other requirements of a balanced diet is of special importance Not only the child, but the mother herself needs these nutrients for the protection of her own teeth Older Persons, Too It is too often overlooked that older persons, too, need a supply of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D for the preservation of the health of their teeth and supporting structures As people grow older, dentists find that they tend to have trouble with periodontal disease This means that there is loss of bone in the jawbones which support the teeth, and deterioration of the membrane which attaches the tooth to its socket The consequence is loosening of the teeth, and loss of teeth if the process is not halted. Sources of Calcium Calcium is best derived from milk and cheese made from the milk And, of course, from ice cream and other foods made with milk Milk is the best source of calcium, so much so that m the absence of adequate milk in the diet, it is difficult to supply the necessary calcium Vitamin D is provided in practically all fluid milk. .Next is the observation that they dont build school desks as BIG as they used to. Parents are shocked in a great many cases when they cant slide, squeeze, cram, or jam their bodies into them. Some of the more determined folks try another seat, thinking they have stumbled on to one that was built for a twiggy type, but no soap, and they take refuge at the back of the room on a spare chair or just stand and try to look invisible. It isnt too long before they feel more at home though, because there are more bulky type parents than string-bea- n types as a general rule. It is quite a startling thing to discover that the young and handsome or down right beautiful creature as the case might be, who sits at the big desk facing you, is the teacher!! Before long, older folks are thinking up all kinds of good reasons why THEY' should perhaps try to find time to take some Adult Education courses this year. After you listen to their clear, concise, no nonsense, summary of the things expected of your child during the year, and have discovered that you dont UNDERSTAND many of the terms and scholastic lingo they come forth with, you have decided that you cant possibly find the time for the Adult classes THIS year, (And after all what would Junior think if his PARENT got a D??) And the changes in equipment is a stunning revelation! Time was when a school was quite advanced if they had a hand bell, a black board, a few texts, a pot bellied stove, and an old maid school teacher. Now, they have electronic equipment, wall to wall carpeting, T.V., new math, speed reading, indoor tracks, outdoor and indoor pools, (or both), motion picture equipment, intercoms, and all such things. What with all of these advantages the thing which surprises me most is that the youngsters still ask their parents to help them spell words or add fractions, just as we used to do when we went to the one room school house.
