The margin between a break even point and a stay in business figure for a small retail business in a community like ours is really not very great. We like to .keep telling ourselves that we shop at home, but deep down we feel guilty because we know that we are doing a larger percentage of our shopping in Provo or Salt Lake. We also like to tell ourselves that, Oh my little bit of business is not going to affect our. local business community one way or another. If enough people keep on telling themselves this and start to believe it, we wont have to any of us worry about our local business community. This is not to say that there is not responsibility on the part of the local businessmen to stay competitive in price, quality and service. M my of our local businesses do meet these requirements and we still dont support them like we should. Did you know that according to Utah State law that of the optional 1 12 cent local sales tax that is collected on all retail sales that 12 of 1 percent of it stays in the community where the sale was made? If we had more of this money coming into our community instead of going to Provo or Salt Lake it could have a very definite effect on property tax rises and the issuing of municipal bonds. As our mayor has announced, Improvements are planned soon, and as these are completed, I hope we will make some new committments to support this community and take renewed pride in Paul Hyde is home on Aug. 9. If we lose the chance to continue to experience all of the small town benefits of personal friendliness by having to go to an impersonal metropolitan community, it will be because of our own doing. I hope we never lose the small town personal greetings and the individualized service, because I like it and that is why I settled in this community in the first place. Deciding to try to build a feature around The Saddest Word he in the English Language, wrote and asked a number of famous people for their selections. An amazing percentage replied and their answers were interesting and characteristic. Here are a few: T.S. Eliot: The saddest word in the English language is of course saddest. Everybody seems to love a parade and most of the cities in our valley have at least one each summer. Its a time of enjoying the beautly of the floats the enthusiasm of the bands, the holiday spirit of the throngs, the colorfulness of the baloons, gay dress and the loviliness of nature. All is not goodness, all is not sweetness, all is not fine at these parades, but much of it is beneficial and worthwhile. Most of these parades leave us with a feeling of good cheer and a sense of carefree abandon which many of us need in our lives of hurry and stress. Recently an otherwise lovely parade was ruined for myself and Im sure others present because of an incident which happened. Sad that we here in America could let ourselves get so careless, so thoughtless, and so down right unpatriotic. Our sons are dying for this country in lands across the sea, are training and preparing to defend us and our country in camps both here and abroad. We may not approve of all that our leaders do we may feel that they could do better, but most of us would still take this country and its faults in preference to any other country or its leaders, so lets at least eographer: The a eographer: The saddest word in the English language is vacum. I just returned from a trip thorugh the northwest, and we sometimes have to stand back and look at our situation here to really appreciate what we have that is distinctly unique. The most frightening thought I had, however, is how easy it would be to lose what we have if we dont put forth some individual effort to keep it. I missed on my travels the chance to walk into a local drug store and be greeted by my own name. It hurts to be mistrusted about every request for a credit clearance. Just to read a small intimate local newspaper like you are doing right now is a thing which is being swallowed up by metropolitan syndicate newspapers in many of our western states. I deem it apriviledge also to be able to ask a local supermarket clerk a simple question like, How many days have you had these tomatoes in stock. and be able to receive a polite, courteous answer.
