The club sought clarification of its role in improving the area adjacent to the City Shops, where the club has made plans for the past two years for plantings and for which the club has received a Sears Foundation grant of $50 for the two years. The city was to have cooperated through installation of water equipment, but it was noted that though materials were delivered to the site some time ago, some of these have now been transferred to the golf course. Improvement of the area was commenced last year with construction of a fence along the area and painting of the shops. During the meeting it was brought out that with promotion of highway beautification by Mrs. L. B. Johnson, wife of President Johnson, federal funds are available for such projects, and that the State Department of Highways will cooperate with communities on request, using federal funds for the work. The city would be required to assist with the plans and later maintain the plantings by watering and other care. Should the newer plan be adopted, the Garden Club would be relieved of its plan for the beautification of the City Shops area.
