Show (continued from page 2) fairness Not Necessary to Believe by Alfonzo Kester I do not pretend to be wise but I believe all of our problems could be solved with truth and reason. We read and hear so much about the delinquency of the young, but who talks about the delinquency of the adult, the place where delinquency truly is. Our children do not plan or film immoral and suggestive shows that are labeled Adults Only" nor do they think up and write the dirt and filth that abound for everyone to read, or the lewd and obscene literature and pictures so available everywhere. Neither do they cause strikes and wars or have any racial hatred, smutty stories, foul language and self conceit. These are all the products and delinquency of the adults who have grown old in mind and heart, their dreams and visions withered away. When we as adults see the seeds of our own short comings begin to grow in your young we try by some kind of warped thinking to place the blame, the shame, and the punishment on our youth. All down thru time we have more or less made human derelicts of our children by example and compulsion. Our young girls are too modest and pure as yet, to wear topless clothing but should the adults continue to make chastity of womanhood as nothing, our young girls will soon be doing the same thing. Then the same old story we foolish adults in our anger and shame will turn our wrath and punishment upon them and cry, What are our youth coming to; we must crack down on them, get tough, kick them off or out." A man posed a question not How is it children long ago, are such angels up to four or five y e a r s old and s u c h monsters when they are in their teens? It seems the answer is fairly plain, children come into the world endowed with all beauties , the freshness and magic of nature. They are filled with hope and happiness and that their mothers and fathers are gods, until we, ourselves, show them that this is not true. So we begin with a lot of nonsensical rules and that ugly word dicipline which covers any degree of punishment and cruelty, to fence them, lid them, thought We have mold them, and to force them to become the same kind of people we are. In our pretty speeches we say we want to give the youth an opportunity to think, to live, and to be, to develop their own character and their own great possibilities, and yet we map every move they make, what to think and say, the subjects they must study, whether they can dance or not, and so on and on and on. We invade their most intelligence, which with kindness spires us many, many delinquency The Payson Chronicle, Payson, Utah con- fusing rules for our youth, like our schools have a policy; the girls must have a dress long enough to reach the floor when they kneel. They are told that this is to teach them modesty, chastity and protect the dignity of young womanhood. Yet the same schools will take the same girls and compel them to wear dresses that reach half way between their knees and hips and have them parade in public before young and old alike, in band, pep club, etc., and say this is all right;" this is not based on modesty or chastity or even common sense but only because some grownup said so. How confusing to the youth, for this is not truth or reason. Can chastity and modesty fly out the window one day and fly in the next. Think seriously what we do to the hope and confidence of our youth when we take from them their honest credits, their own sacred thinking, and deny them a right to make up their studies, brand them falsely, (for less intelligent than they truly are). Brand them to themselves, their parents, to the college that they may attend and the whole world. This is not done for the inspiration, the uplift, the encouragement of the youth, or to make a wiser and happier world. It is done to break the spirit of the youth and bend them to our own will and whim. A in authority group of grown-up- s meet together and say Our kids are not conforming to our policies. We must make some more rules, put on s t r o n g e r punishment and build another detention home and we will have personal affairs, the clothes they wear, the cut of their shirt, and the length of their hair. They must be quiet and submissive to every adult in their circle of life, and obey every rule, regardless if they are based on reason or nonsense. If they fail in doing this they will be disciplined, and called many disrespectful names, teenage delinquents, misfits or problems. There is nothing wrong or mean about our youth. They are the greatest value and hope of our world. They bubble with enthusiasm, strength and confidence, and they alone have that rare ability to vision, dream and reaching up into that wonderful plane called inspiration from where all true wisdom comes, and all they need is to meet some wise and understanding friends. Men who teach and train dogs, horses, and birds to perform almost human feats, and to bring to light the great qualities of the mind tell us never can they use punishment, harsh words or cruelty as it would break their spirit and heart. They then lose their confidence and thus the animal or bird is ruined. Our children are worth a thousand times more than dogs or birds. Learned men say that the one thing that distinguishes a human from an animal is the soul which enables man to think and reason with and kindness which he all adults believed in. Thursday, We have many sincere, dedicated parents, teachers and leaders, but we must think more with truth and reason, think less of punishment and with kindness and wisdom, and see in every youth the divine seeds of magic miracles and progression undreamed of, and feel blessed that we may have a part in the watering and cultivating and inspiring that seed to grow. For in every youth lies the genius to be a Lincoln, an Edison, or a Joan of Arc; if it does not die. When we can feel and know in our soul that youth is the highest act of creation and the noblest handiwork of God, it is then and only then that we can claim the proud title of a wise and understanding adult and it is only then we will succeed. To the youth I say God bless you. Forgive and obey your adults to the best of your ability but do not pattern after them. Do not grow old in mind or heart. Hang on to your visions and dreams, believe in them and they will come true. Keep your courage and your faith for this is a wonderful world to live in, full of magic and miracles and wonderful opportunities barely scratched by us as yet. Contemplate and love the precious mandates of our American flag with liberty and justice for all in- in- brotherhood. If this is true, it seems logical that when any adult in their association with and leadership of a child resorts to punishment, ridicule or physical abuse he has only ceased to be guided by intelligence and begins to follow the instincts of animal, and we lose the childs confidence and respect, and the youth becomes confused and afraid and begins to wonder about those high ideals of truth and goodness, tired May God you in help work. your Study and How whipped. There is implanted in you a fund of science and infinite value that you may be great. Ever bear in mind and stamp it upon your heart, to be great is to be good." There is no other formula. Remember the idea of Emerson: Once in a long time there comes along a young man or woman brave enough to be good and wise. If you dont meet any wise and understanding friends, remember in a few years you will be adults. Live so by truth and reason, kindness and fairness that you will be the wise and understanding friend to the youth that follows you and the world will build monuments to your memory and people will called you blessed. There never lived a youth that would not obey and work their hearts out for an adult for whom they had love and respect. It is difficult to understand why down thru the ages adults have set so wide a gulf between themselves and their children, sometimes almost with hate, as if the child were another species, so many times abused, ordered about, disrespected and made light of as though they were something they had to tolerate.
