ZIP Code Two Years Old, Mail moves faster by code Without ZIP Code, the Post Office oould easily be drowned in a sea of mail, Postmaster James Durrant said In a state- ment marking ZIP Codes second anniversary. Previous to ZIP Code, Payson mail moved in a crazy quilt transportation pattern from terminal to terminal between the nations 34,000 post offices. With et use of the code, mail now is routed between only 553 mail passing points called sectional centers. From these transportation and population hubs, feeder transport at ion routes service near-b- y post offices. Postmaster Durrant explained that the first digit in a ZIP Code locates a specific area of the country (New England, Midwest, etc.), the second and third digets indicate the sectional center and the last two digits identify an associated post office. West Germany has instituted a similar systems, and sever al other European nations are now studying the U.S. operations. of the Since about four-fiftnations mail is generated by business, it is interesting to note that nearly 90 percent of the 80, OOQbiggest mailers in the nation are now cooperating in the program. The first mechanical ZIP Code reader will be placed in operation this fall in Detroit, five-dig- actiop. At 7:00 Fourth Ward and Second Ward will play. If Second wins they will go into the round-rob- in with Third Ward. (Third Ward has gained a berth in the round-rob- in as the 3rd place team.) But if Fourth Ward wins, then there will be a 5 way tie for 4th place. The 5 teams would be Second Ward, Fourth Ward, Fifth Ward, Sixth Ward, and West Ward. At 8:45 will be the championship game between Park Ward and First Ward. Both teams have a 0 record. The winner of this contest will be the Nebo Stake champions and enter the region tournament. The championship game will pit First Wards Jay Barker against Park Wards hitters. (9 men from Park Ward are over the .400 mark.) Park Ward is also a fine defensive club with two men, Jerry Hansen and Paul Carter, who are good chuckers that will pose some problems for the First Ward. Stake Softball championship game is into the correct separation bin. To illustrate the new ZIP Code routing system, the postmaster said that a parcel from Boston, Mass, to Payson previously was stopped enroute for further sorting at Chicago, 111. and Council Bluffs, Iowa before reaching Payson. Now packages from Boston, Mass, bearing ZIP Code 84651 are made up in direct sacks. The direct routing by ZIP Code eliminates the sorting delays along the route and speeds delivery. In addition to better service to the customer, ZIP Code has helped cut costs to the Post Office Department, Mr. Durrant said. Softball for another year is rapidly coming to a close. Tonight is the last night of the schedule. The team that is in first place after tonights action will be the Nebo Stake champions and go into region tournament as the first place team from this stake. After the league schedule there round-robi- n. will be The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place teams will compete in this single-eliminati- on to round-rob- in 7-- determine who will enter the region tournament as 2nd place representative from this stake.
