Camps Hold Meetings More than 69,900 men, women and children in Utah were receiving social security benefit payments at the end of 1963 These payments amounted to about $4,691,000 a month, according to Kesler T. Powell, district manager for the Social in Security Administration Provo, Utah district. This represents an increase in the number of beneficiaries over the same period last year, he said. The social security program was 28 years old last August 14. In reviewing the growth of the program, Mr. Powell noted that at the close of 1940, the first year in which monthly payments were made, only 200,000 people in the nation were receiving payments. In December 1963, over 19 million were on the social security benefit rolls. Benefit payments in calendar year 1963 totalled Air Force Slates Exams Each Week Technical Bill Sergeant Blush, Air Force recruiter, has announced that the Air Force is now administering the Air- mens Qualifying Examination at 9 am. and 1 p.m. every Wednesday and Friday in Room 4, Federal Office Building, Provo, Utah. Taking the aptitude test does not obligate anyone in any way to the Air Force, Sergeant Blush emphasized. The four occupational fields covered in the tests are: administrative, Mechanical, General, and Electronics. According to Sergeant Blush, young men and women are needed for technical training in over 500 different jobs. They $56,292,000 in Utah. Many changes have been made in the program since its rather modest beginning. At first, only workers in commerce and industry were covered. Now, more than 9 out of 10 working Americans are covered by the program. Nine out of every 10 children and their mothers can count on monthly benefits if the family breadwinner dies. Nearly 90 percent of the people reaching 65 in 1963 were eligible for bene- fits. The basic idea of the social security law is a simple one. During working years employees, their employers, and people pay social security taxes, which go, into special funds. When earnings stop because the worker has retired, or died, or is disabled, payments are made from the funds to replace part of the earnings the family lost. Many people have a very hazy idea of just what to expect from social security at death, disability, or retirement, Mr. Powell said, and thats why we encourage folks to come and see us and get first hand information on this program that means so much to so many. The District Office is located 170 North 2nd West, Provo, Utah. We also have Field Representatives that will visit you if you cannot come in or write. at are assigned to technical training schools, suited to their aptitudes, upon completion of their basic Air Force training.
