You can find Indians by the hundreds on the Unitah and Ouray Indian reservation at Fort Duschesne. Americas most important display of fossilized dinosaur bones is located at Dinosaur National Monument near Jensen. The lofty Uintas are the only large chain of mountains in America that run east and west. And workman are feverishly pouring concrete on Flaming Gorge Dam which is rising 50 stories into the sky on the Green River in Daggett County. Visits to these scenic attractions and others in the northeastern sector of the state are suggested by D. James Cannon, director of the Utah Tourist and Publicity Council in this weeks See Utah tour. The tour begins at Duschesne on U. S. Highway1 40, or at some other convenient starting point, depending on where you live. It continues through Roosevelt, Vernal and on to Dinosaur National Monument Then it briefly retraces back to Vernal and up the slope of the (Uintas to Flaming Gorge Dam, Dutch John, Ashley National Forest, Manila and Linwood. If you happen to plan your trip in early August, you can see the Indians in full tribal dress at the annual Sun Dance at Whiterocks, near Roosevelt. Hundreds of Indians bring their families to this traditional religious ceremony and camp at the dance site. No picture-takin- g is allowed because of the sacred nature of the dances. Indian dancers will also perform at the annual Uintah Basin Industrial Convention in Roosevelt, Aug 9 to 11. On the night of August 11 an Pageant will be, held. Other events of the convention include fashion shows, parades, athletic contests and educational classes. Vernal is located in a broad, green valley at the. base of the Uintah Mountains. From a high ramp visitors can watch at work, chpaleontologists iseling away the cliff and outlining the huge bones in bold relief. The rest of the national monument is a primitive wilderness area of rugged canyons, high plateaus and mountains. Unpaved roads from U. S. 40 lead to spectacular viewpoints along the deep canyons of the Green and Yampa Rivers. Between Vernal and Manila on State Highway 44, a billion years of the earths geological history lies exposed. Markers along the road call attention to the various geological formations. Some 35 .miles from Vernal the highway branches, Highway 44 continues via Green Lake and Sheep Creek to Manila and Highway 260 to Flaming George Dam and Dutch John. At this point the traveler may take his choice epending gorge cut through the Uintas gy a tributary of the Green River. In places it is 2,000 to 2,500 feet deep, with many eroded fantastic formations from the canyon walls, in a multitude of colors. If you continue on Highway 260, you will pass over a suspension bridge across the Green River, just upstream from the damsite.
