Forand and strangly supported by organized labor and b y congressional liberals, including Senator Kennedy and Johnson. The Senate Finance Committee followed the example of the House and approved a federal-stat- e program to be financed out of general Treasury revenue. This approach is favored by the administra(D-R.I- .), tion. Opposes Minimum Wage Increases Senator Goldwater (R.Ariz.) firmly believes that the federal government should not try to regulate the American economy. Opposing proposals to in- crease the $1.00 an hour minimum wage and to broaden coverage, the Arizonian told his Senate colleagues that if we could release the full strength of the free enterprise system in the United States we would do more to combat unemployment and bring about higher wages, higher profits, and better living conditions in one year than any government can ever do in its entire history. "We are foolishly playing with dynamite he asserted. When we inject the federal government further and further into our daily lives. On the contrary, he S3id, we must exert our efforts to create sound fiscal and monetary policies and establish a climate conducive to economic growth. Wage increases imposed by legislative fiat without any regard for their economic consequences, he said, will curtail employment, reduce job opportunities, and result ultimately in price rises the consumer must pay for goods and services. The price of the 1961 wheat crop will be supported at a minimum national average of $1.78 per bu., according to Claude Hunting, chairman, Utah County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee. The 1961 minimum rate reflects 757r of the estimated parity price for wheat as of the beginning of the next marketing year, July 1, 1961. The level is indicated on the basis of wheat supplies expected to be available at that time. The minimum support will not be reduced, but may be increased if the wheat parity price and the wheat supply situation as of July 1, 1961, indicates a higher price. 3.
