Low Cost-Uniq- ue The PTA organization for Exceptional Children asked that a summer recreation program be orgaized to benefit the exceptional children in this area. The term Exceptional Child is defined as being that child who is normal but has certain deviations so far as vision, hearing, or speech is concerned, or who may have a crippling condition, be emotionally distuibed or mentally deficient. Not to be overlooked is the problem faced by the exceptionally gifted child. We must always hold that these children have the same feelings as other children and very often if they have special problems when quite young, are unaware of being in any way different from other children. These exceptional children are then, normal children with special problems which require special care to overcome so that they may be healthy, happy, useful members of their families, communities, society, and the state. The County Commissioners were contacted by a representative committee of the Exceptional Child PTA organization. The commissioners were very cooperative but felt that it was a problem for each city to face and work out. At a meeting of the county mayors the County Beauty UTAH CONCRETE BLOCK Permanent and low costl Utah Concrete Block and Pastel lava Split Block can beautify your home and yard as you never believed possible, and in many cases, you can do the work yaurselft Free Plans, instructions and estimates are yours for the asking well be glad to helpl Commissioners placed this problem on the agenda and the mayors group were very enthusiastic in supporting the idea of a summer recreation program for exceptional children but asked for guidance in getting such a program started. As an outgrowth of this meeting the Utah County Recreation Committee for Exceptional Children was organized composed. of Mrs. Josie Broadhead, Vice Chair- nian; Miss Jean Trip, secretary; and general members of the recreation committee, Dr. Alonzo Mcrley, Mr. Bryan McKendrick, Mrs. Mary Krider, Dr. Merlin Mecham, Mr. H. F. Brienholt, Commissioner Jones, Sterling Mrs. Henry Heisch, and the PTA President of Exceptional Children who is Mrs. Ben Lewis.. The County Commissioners appointed money to be used in the hiring of an Executive Director to work under the direction of this committee and help the various cities within the county to set up a program for the exceptional child in conjunction with the recreation program already existing in their area. The committee appointed Mr. Glen R. Brown as the Executive Director of the program. It is proposed that the exceptional children within the various cities of the county will be able to participate in a program planned for them and organized to include a water program, and socialization with games finger painting, story telling, music, dancing, and handicraft as possible areas of participation. It is planned that this program will be open for all Exceptional Children in the County, but in order to participate each child must register. In the future announcements will be forthcoming as to how to register in this program, where to get the forms, and so forth. After the LOHENGRIN "Fence-with-Bloc- ideas! and RICE ac- !
