' -- 7' sJL ( i li rA i nf f i? i i s'?7 r 6 Utt'ciTV ''‘‘‘J-w- g J'U!i: r -- p iis CT "— 27" - Centerfield Mayfield honor longtime residents Cara Anderson to be honored at Centerfield Parade and Dinner Carla Sofia Kirsten Poulsen Anderson was bom June 25 1909 in Copenhagen Denmark On November 19 1914 Carla and her mother left Denmark in join her ther who had came to America 2 year’s prior They arrived in America December 3 1914 Carla being so young didn’t remember much about the voyage but did remember the big red apple the LDS Missionaries gave her if she wouldn’t cry when she got inoculations What a joyous reunion when Carla and her mother arrived in Utah (Gunnison Depot) Carla’s father and a few other family members were there to greet them They left the depot in horse and buggy to go to their new home in where she still resides today Carla went to school at Centerfield Elementary and then Gunnison Valley High School The first year in Elementary School was a memorable year Carla couldn’t speak a word of English and the teacher Mrs James (Jean) Jensen tried to be understanding with her because of the language barrier She made many young friends as they liked to hear her speak Danish When Carla was in the fifth grade tragedy struck their happy home Carla's mother died 2 days after childbirth leaving a tiny baby boy Carla’s brother Carl Christian Poulsen (Manti Ut) bom May 3 1921 Carla then went to live with her mother’s sister Gertrude Christiansen and her family In 1926 Carla met Miles Anderson and they were married March 9 927 From this union four Children Maurine (Brice) Christensen AnderClyde son Hal (LaRae) Anderson and Gerda (Paul) Caldwell were bom Carla has also loved to crochet Parade queens traditionally smile and wave from the most elaborate float along the route But when Mayfield celebrates Pioneer Day on July 24th Erma Anderson Grand Marshall of the and embroidery until lately when her eyes would not permit this close work These talents she inherited from her mother who taught classes to the local people in our valley after she arrived here from Denmark Carla has shared her talents and hobbies with many family members and friends Each have keepsakes of her beautiful handiwork in their homes Carla's basement her pride and joy was full of canned fruit vegetables and pickles from their own garden Carla has worked in various callings in the church and many years teaching groups Carla in several has had employment places Oswald Beck’s grocery store in Centerfield Christy’s Market in Gunnison Frank’s 5 and 10 Cent Store in Gunnison Mayfield Manor and the sewing plant in Manti Utah Carla likes to spend time with her family loves to play cards with her cousin Alice Belliston and travel In October 2003 at age 94 she went on a 12 day Hawaiian landcruise vacation accompanied Now at by two granddaughters age 95 she is planning an upcoming cruise to Alaska Carla has seen many changes in Centerfield throughout the years She still enjoys life loves her home where she has lived on the same comer for 90 years!
